Default Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War

Those of you who have found your Union ancestor, I would encourage you to consider joining Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) if you are not already a member. Y'all that have Southern ancestry should join SCV as well. I myself was very happy to find that my great-great-great grandfather served in the Union Army, thus making me eligilbe for full membership. Those of you who do not have ancestors that fought in the war, fear not, for SUVCW also has an associate member category as well.

Both SUVCW and SCV do a lot to raise awareness about the war and the men that fought it. For instance, SUVCW has projects to fix GAR memorials, hold various events around the nation commemorating events and persons relating to the war, and identify the graves of Union soldiers, particularly the last Civil War soldier to die in each county or town. In any event, at least consider the SUVCW if you are descended from a Union veteran (http://suvcw.org)

For all of you still searching, I would encourage you to also look in manuscript collections to see if your ancestor's letters may be held in the collection. Happy hunting and best of luck to you all.

The problem around Nashville is the lack of camps. Closest group we have is in Clarksville about an hour away if the traffic on I24 is good. Since I have ancestors on both sides, I'd be interested locally. Guess we need to start a chapter. The SCV is reasonably cooperative, just no one to cooperate with! We're covered up in yankess, so there must be some eligible folks walking around. Many of our local re-enactors have blue and gray uniforming.

Daniel, I'd love to join the SUVCW and the SCV, but as with so many other ACW-related activities, membership is closed to me because of my gender. (Ask anyone here... I'm nobody's auxiliary!

That's startling news. Nope, your talents would be wasted on the Order of the Confederate Rose. Glad to see you back on the forum.

Larry, what I would suggest is that you find out how many other SUVCW members there are in the Nashville area, as well as eligible members and look at organizing them to start a camp if you are interested.

Zou, there is an organization called the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic that might interest you and I would check it out. I understand your feelings on it and feel somewhat the same way about the Associate member category in SUVCW.

I'm a former member of both the SUVCW and the SCV. I really think that both organizations do very good work with preservation, and commemorating their respective veterans. In fact, I need to resubmit my membership dues, though it it hard to participate in three different organizations. Currently, I'm a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
