Default capt. David Neff 43rd Tennessee

Hello, I'm a relative of Capt. David Neff, Co.G. of the 43rd Reg.tenn.volunteers. I would like as much info. as possible about the 43rd, and how I might beable to find some photo's. I have been doing living history for about four years and I enjoy it. I am doing a impression of Capt. Neff, and I want him to be proud of me.
I live in Salt lake City, Utah. If there is anyone on this forum who lives in Salt lake and who would like to form a unit to honor our ancestors I would love to join you. For those folks out of town, I look forward to chating with you. Thank you for your time. May God bless us all and this great nation! Chad

Hello, me again. Welome to the board, by the way! I suggest you post a query and/or do some snooping on the Jefferson County, TN genweb website. You can probably drum up a relative near his home. Also try the same on the Neff family forum on Genforum.com. Good luck!

Smile Neffs in Utah?

Didn't know there were any Neffs west of the river. Capt. D.T. Neff was my ggg-grandfather. A couple of his sons moved to West Tenn. after the War, which is how we got to Jackson. I knew one of his grandaughters in the early '60s--she was living with my grandmother at the time. I have some info and a couple of pics. Contact me if interested.

Default From the National Park Service Soldier/Sailor Registry

Confederate 43rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Gillespie's) (5th East Tennessee Volunteers)

43rd Infantry Regiment [also called 5th East Tennessee Volunteer Regiment] was organized at Knoxville, Tennessee, during December, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Polk, Rhea, Meigs, Bledsoe, Hawkins, Roane, Jefferson, McMinn, Bradley, and Hamilton. It moved to Virginia, Kentucky, then Mississippi where it was assigned to A.W. Reynolds' Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The unit fought at Champion's Hill and Big Black River Bridge, then was captured in the fight for Vicksburg. After being exchanged and reorganized as mounted infantry, it was attached to General Vaughn's Brigade and during April, 1864, contained 215 effectives. It joined General Early in the Valley of Virginia and was active in the battles and skirmishes of his campaign. Later the regiment fought at Russellville in Tennessee, returned to Virginia, moved to North Carolina where it joined President Davis' escort, and ended the war at Washington, Georgia, in May, 1865, with a force of 123 men. The field officers were Colonel James W. Gillespie, Lieutenant Colonel David M. Key, and Majors Lawson Guthrie and William H. McKamy.

Contact the East Tennessee Historical Society in Knoxville to see if they have anything.
