I've been researching my gr-gr grandfather William Staines. He was in Co. C of the 26th Tx cavalry. I have copies of his CSR but some notations don't make sense. He enlisted in Galveston Tx. on Sept. 22, 1861. He applied for a discharge in '62 since he was over 41 year old. But his records show that he's working with the QM as a teamster. Does this mean he was a civilian working as a teamster for the QM Dept. ? Next question, Staines was killed by accident on July 22, 1864 in Louisiana. I've read that there was a large Confederate encampment near Alexandria around that date. Is there any way to find out what actually happened as far as this accident is concerned. (Kicked to death by a horse, etc...) Is there any way to find out where he was buried ?
His grave is probably long lost to time.
I know this is a longshot but maybe there are surviving letters penned by members of the 26th who might haven known or even mentioned Staines. His widow remarried and didn't apply for a pension.
(Her second husband was also a Confederate Veteran)
