Researching Your Civil War AncestryDo you have a distant relative who fought in the Civil War? Would you like to find out if you do? This is the discussion for you!
I'm greatly disturbed by a recent bit of news concerning a proposed substantial increase in copy fees for military pension records of our ancestors. Can anyone elaborate? This will be somewhat devistating to future researchers?

Larry:
Read the news on another thread. Seems the rates are going up to something like $137 from $28 (??). A huge jump. Guess the archives are trying to be self-sufficient -- or they're cutting back on government funding. (Correction: $37 to $125 for copies of pension records.)
Must be devastating to all our people who are still trying to assemble copies of their ancestors' documents.
Ole

Has to be cuts and attempts at self-sufficiency. They close at 5 pm whereas it use to be 9 pm. They were open on weekends for research (micro-film only or already pulled boxes) but that's eliminated too. Thankfully I got most everything I need for my own research done - I think.
In 2001 I paid $17.00 to the National Archives for the complete military record of my great-grandfather. It was a nice find, as his recommendation for the CMH to the Adjutant General's Office that was recommended by Major General Parke, Commander 9TH Corps in February 1865, was included in it. Sadly, he never received the CMH or was there any record of why he did not receive it.

I was not aware that there was a flat rate for certain types of document. A little over a year ago, I was charged $0.50 per page for copies of records from the Southern Claims Commission.

I went to the MA branch of the National Archives and was given a form to fill out and mail. It said it was a $17.00 fee for records of a Civil War soldier. They photocopied about 20 pages and it took several months for the records to arrive.
