Default Colonel Joseph Nemett

Is anyone familiar with the 5th Missouri Cavalry's Colonel Joseph Nemett? I am trying to find his city of birth in Hungary, and his parents' names. Some very kind people from "Roots web" were helping me, but I think we're at a dead end.My maiden name was Nemeth, and I have reason to think the Colonel and I may be related, but I haven't been able to prove or disprove it......Ilona Susan

Default Col. Joseph Nemett

He lived in St. Louis., Mo. He was a cavalry officer in Hungary, sided with Kossuth in the Hungarian liberation war,was interned with Kossuth in Turkey, came to America with Kossuth on the "Mississippi", settled in St. Louis, was a veterinary surgeon and horse dealer, and joined the Union 's Fifth Missouri Cavalry, was a colonel at Battle of Pea Ridge and was a Benton Hussar. He resigned a bit after the battle - he was 46 at the beginning of the CW. He is in the biographical work by Vasvary:" Lincoln's Hungarian Heroes".

You may already know this but here is what I learned from the 1860 census on Heritage Quest:

1860 US Census, St. Louis, Co.,Missouri, wd-1 St. Louis, dwelling 828, family 2060

Joseph Nemett 43 surgeon and horse trader b. Hungary
Lena age 23 b. Hungary
Bela age 4 b. Missouri
Julia? age 1 b. Missouri
also a Julia Hahn age 12 b.Missouri was living with this family.
They appear to have been in a boarding house at the time of the census
There were four other families living in this residence:
Jansen, Bannupky, Schauer, Houshka

I don't find him in 1870.

I hope this helps some
Roger

Default Col.Nemeth

Thank you , Roger. My copy of Vasvary's book has arrived, and it doesn't have what I need either - Nemeth's (Nemett) city of birth so I can contact the Church there, and his parents' names. This guy lead a colorful life and it would make a cool movie!........Susan
