I belong to an SCV camp in Brentwood, Tennessee. Although we have some rather large and impressive libraries here in town and the state archives, the guys at the camp all claim the best equipped and best source of Confederate records is at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama. The Wallace State Library is housed in a modern six-story building, it provides a wide variety of learning resources for students, faculty, and the community. These resources include books, periodicals, audio-visual equipment, audio-visual aids, materials on DVD and CD-ROM, Alabama Virtual Library database access and general internet access. The Library has an auditorium with a rear projection screen for viewing video, DVD, CD-ROM, PowerPoint presentations and slides. It also is equipped with digital satellite communications.
The library may be reached by calling 256-352-8260 or by e-mail (library@wallacestate.edu). The library is closed between semesters, holidays and special events. The dates and time will be posted on the library door as far in advance as possible. A full closing schedule is posted at all library entrances. The library has an energetic and qualified staff that assists patrons with their research needs.
The second floor is equipped with 16 computers with internet access and Microsoft office programs (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Front page and Publisher). The Library management software is powered by the ATHENA Corporation and is accessible through the Wallace State web site (

The library has 45,000 circulating and non-circulation items for patron needs. These items cover all subjects that may be discussed in the instructional classroom. It also provides approximately 167 periodicals to support the many courses taught to Wallace States students. The Library can be reached by dialing 256-352-8260
The library has a computer lab equipped with 24 computers which have internet access. The lab assistant administers test and detailed interactive CD-ROM programs assigned by the Wallace State Faculty. The operational hours are Wednesday - 1:00p-8:00p, Friday - 7:30a-3:30p, Saturday 10:00a-4:00p. It is always staffed by professionally trained computer operators who can assist patrons with research or computer needs. The lab can be reached by dialing 256-352-8266.
The Family and Regional History program is located on the fifth and sixth floors of the library building. It includes an extensive and growing research collection. The Wallace State College Library was the first non-Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints library allowed to borrow directly from the holdings of the Genealogical Society of Utah, Including some three million records and books from around the world. Equipment and assistance are available for the copying of old family photos. Local records of interest are also microfilmed by the college.
