Default Civil War fife and drum music question

Dear List Members;

I am not certain if any of you have participated in the making of the movie Gettysburg or not.

What I am seeking, is the recorded music of the musical piece of the Union fife and drum playing "The Minstral Boy." I have heard other versions, to include the vocal but, I promise--I have never heard better music then that of those men and boys, who were in the Gettysburg movie.

Might any of you know how I can find a copy of this group of musicians of the fife and drum corps that played The Minstral Boy?

I am sure they play other songs very well however, I cannot find professional or non-professionals that did a more perfect job then those wonderful people in that film.

Sincerely,
M. E. Wolf

Hi ME: I have the soundtrack to "Gettysburg" and I can't find "The Minstrel Boy" on it. It may be in there somewhere though, maybe as part of another tune, or on the same track with another one. There are no artists listed on the CD either.

I do have a CD by "The Camp Chase Fife and Drums" with that tune on it. I don't know if it's the one you heard on "Gettysburg" or not, or if you would like this rendition as much. It's Volume One with the title being "The Camp Chase Fife and Drums". Also has "On the Road to Boston/Recruiting Sergeant" on it.

Dear William41/Terry;

The movie Gettysburg has The Minstral Boy. The movie's sound track does not. Pity isn't it? Movie sound track has the background music and I suppose the men and boys who played it in the movie--wasn't counted as the 'movie' sound track and rather a 'scene.'

The Camp Chase Fife and Drums aren't bad but, its hard to compare with the movie's version. I figured they were re-enactors as they were extremely serious and these drummers and fife players looked like medal winners in their class.

William42/Terry--its one of those times that hearing it from these guys in the movie it grips you tight type deals for me.

Thank you for the lead though!!

Sincerely,
M. E. Wolf

No problem ME. I would like to hear the music from the movie though, again. This time maybe I'll catch it. Do you remember what scene the fifers were in, or playing behind? I'll ff to that spot or general area so I can take a listen. Thx.

The fifes and drums played "The Minstrel Boy" in the first part of the movie, when Father Corby was preparing to bless the troops. I'm not close enough to my DVD to scan the scenes.

Ok thanks Zou. Just needed a ballpark area. I'll see if I can spot it.

Dear William42/Terry;

Yes sir--the film Gettysburg should be Chapter 26.

At the tail end of Chapter 25, General Longstreet is speaking to Colonel Freemantle of the United Kingdom who is an observer--about 'different dreams.' Chapter 26 begins immediately with Union fife and drum corps playing "A Minstral Boy." A few moments later; General W. S. Hancock rides up with his aides and remove their hats at the music and the services on the field.

Sincerely,
M. E. Wolf

Dear William42/Terry;

In looking at customer reviews on Amazon.com; a customer commented that it was missing from the Gettysburg sound track.

Another thing I had wished they done on Gettysburg and Gods and Generals, was list who the field musicians were, e.g. both Union and Confederate for each song featured in the films.

There are plenty "The Minstral Boy" with bag pipes, guitar, vocals and such but--there isn't anything like a fife and drum piece.

Sincerely,
M. E. Wolf

Dear William42/Terry;

I went ahead and ordered a CD from The Camp Chase Fife & Drum Corps site. I looked at the additional music from Gettysburg and there you are able to see that there were four (4) principle groups in the music and with all the music on the CD--The Minstrel Boy was missing. [Doh!]

It seems that The Camp Chase Fife & Drum and 2nd Maryland Fife & Drums joined together to play the various music, e.g. Old 1812, Gary Owens, Frog in the Well. I just am in disbelief they left off The Minstrel Boy. The other groups involved was The Americus Band and The Saxton's Cornet Band.

I wrote an E-mail to the Commander of the US Army's Field Band, who is Headquartered at Fort Meade, MD. I asked if they had recorded The Minstrel Boy in fife and drum. So, we'll see.

I'll be sure to let folks know about the Camp Chase's CD's version of The Minstrel Boy.

Sincerely,
M. E. Wolf
