In many cases they didn't... a gum blanket across the end or in the summer they dispensed w/ the tent all together. If it rained they just rolled over so their gum blanket was on top. They stayed drier... not dry.

THe end parts you see at Sutler Row are a post war critter that didn't see service in the ACW.

Default What they did...

One option, mentioned in Soldiering by Rice Bull (an excellent first person account of soldier life, btw), is to get a third man to share your dog tent. That third shelter half can be buttoned to one end to close it off and also provides a little more length as well as a handy place to stow knapsacks or other gear. Three normal sized fellows can fit fairly comfortably (and warmly) in a dog tent. If you need a little more elbow room just shorten the poles or sticks on the ends the tent will of course be a little shorter but also wider as a result.

Rice also points out that three men is also an ideal size for a mess in that it allows for one man to fetch water, one to gather firewood, and one to do the cooking.

So you think the war in the East was tough, do you? Ever consider what it would mean to be captured by Apache?

The shelter half is made from cotton drill which is fairly easy to find. I purchased it at a local fabric store here in Arizona. I've been told you can even find it in proper widths at big box stores like Jo-Anns or (horror of horrors) Wal.mart on occaision.

I'm not sure what fabrics would be best for a confederate fly. Drill is pretty light material.
