I'm going to add to Steves excellent links; a few might be duplicates...
Sutlers/Vendors A few examples.
http://www.bridgemicro.com/msullivan/catalog/index.htm?
Stony Brook is a first rate Vendor for trousers and his Consignment page often has hidden treasures. The difference in cost between Museum Grade & Commercial grade is readily apparent here… he can’t keep his Commercial grade in stock.
http://www.regtqm.com
The Regimental QM is a first rate vendor, I’m fond of their “Campaigner” area, better quality, guaranteed US made and not that much more expensive, you do get what you pay for.
http://www.cjdaley.com
Probably the most knowledgeable individual on the uniforms alive today… he is literally famous among the re-enacting community. His stuff is quite expensive, but if you have it in your hands it is not a bet but fact that it is an exact copy of an original he has studied carefully. A bit rich for the blood of most… but the holy grail of gear.
http://www.umvmco.com
A good, actually better than most, mainstream Sutler. Their Leathers tin & Iron ware in particular are well regarded. They also have been around a long time… unfortunately some old habits die hard and not all of their gear is as good as their leathers. In the past they had an issue w/ Quality Control, but they got that behind them and are again pretty consistant. w/ decent stuff. Note the extreme difference in cost between these fellas & CJ Daley.
Units A few examples.
http://www.33wis.com/
the 33rd Wisconsin is one of those Authentic units that doesn’t have a bad rep from the Mainstream crowd, a different approach and a different attitude marks them IMO as one of the premier units in the Midwest.
http://www.2ndminnesota.org/
2nd Minnesota is another good unit on the high end of the Mainstream to Progressive side of the aisle. First rate fellas all.
http://www.3rdminn.homestead.com/
This is my unit… the site doesn’t get updated all that often which is very frustrating but we are an example of a Mainstream unit slowly pushing towards the Progressive side of the hobby.
http://www.angelfire.com/tn3/tenncompanyb/index.htm
Scott’s Battery is one of the premier
Arty units in the Midwest, high end Mainstream but a first class presentation and a unit w/ a stellar rep.
http://www.37thtexas.org/html/chboys.html
A unit w/ some Black Confederates, another unit w/ a superb rep… they have had some severe problems dealing w/ racism… it’s documented on their site.
http://45thil-5thga.org/
Probably your average run of the mill Mainstream unit that takes things seriously. A great group of guys.
http://www.3rdusct.org
A USCT group who are very serious about their role. Do a wonderful job as I understand it, I’ve never seen them on the field but it is a unit that is talked about a good bit… I can’t say that I’ve ever heard a negative thing about them.
http://www.geocities.com/womansoldier
This site is by women re-enactors for women re-enactors… telling how to do things right.
Message Boards www.civilwartalk.com
I’m a bit biased… one of the better boards out there. Cover all aspects of the war but really doesn’t deal w/ re-enacting all that much… though the conflict between North & South that still exists is quite apparent.
www.authentic-campaigner.com
IMHO this is the holy grail of online info for re-enactors… inaccuracies are brutally pointed out if not outright purged. It is NOT always a friendly place and make no question about it being a place for anyone but hardcores being welcome.
There are literally hundreds of other message boards out there; to be honest these are the only two I frequent anymore… the others lacked the interest or the quality.
Drill
All of the below links are first rate w/ animation to help teach. I feel they are the best other than doing to teach drill. And when you only have 2-3 guys they are a way to see how things work w/ larger numbers of men.
