You can do it one of several ways, w/ or w/out a ridgepole.

I favor a ridge pole & a pair of notched sticks only because I can more easily keep my gear off the ground by hanging it on the tent. It's completely up to you.

Your uprights should be between 40-50" tall if you are using a ridge pole. If you are just using the two uprights they should be about 45" tall. A guy rope off the front & back w/ the four corners pegged securely should set you fine.

As a note depending on the manufacturer the holes may not quite match up when you decide to button her together. The shelter half was designed to have one side inside out when buttoned together; don't really know why. So if you get your shelter together and the buttons and holes don't quite match up... unbutton it and flip one side over and it should go together.

Good Luck

Two higher up rights and 4 smaller ones for the corners will make it work like a tent fly

and let air come through on the hot muggy days. or you can strech a rope between two trees and then all you have to do is stake down the corners.

or use the same method and use two up rights to hold up one side to make like a bakers tent.

or you could just use half of a dog tent and make a lean to / shebang out off it..

a item that can be used many diffrent ways.

Steve pretty much hit the nail square, the dog tent is a very versatile tent.

Default Tent pole Dilema

Garrett,
This information may be a little too late to help you as I'm sure by now you know all about the dog tent but it may help someone else.
Unless you are also going to purchase a set of contract poles
to go with your two new shelter halfs you will have to make your own. The govt. contract pole was two piece with a metal sleeve to connect the two sections and it was 3 ft. 10 in in length and 1 in. in diameter when connected. I would recommend that you check out the book "The Federal Civil War Shelter Tent" by Frederick C. Gaede. It has everything you've ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask about the shelter tent.

Aside from that, you cut forked stickes to a height that suits you as there was no regulation on this and use one of the two methods described by the two previous members. Just don't buy the shelter halfs with the big ole brass grommets, they are incorrect. The shelterhalfs used during the Civil War did not have metal grommets they were hand sewn. Nothing stands out more than those big ole shinny brass grommets on a dog tent.
Hope this helps

Default End piece

Oh yea, I forgot to tell ya. And don't buy those triangel end flaps that many sutlers sell they are post war, wasn't there, not happenin'. Not to mention just plain wrong. There were no QMD contracts for any such item but that doesn't mean individual soldiers didn't come up with a "fix' for this problem. If you make one I would definately make it look home made!

Here's a Sutler that sells poles for shelter tents. gives demensions and if you handy you can make your own as per the ones contracted during the war:

Also describes how to carry them easily.
