I don't think that the items were props of the photographer, they may well be battlefield salvage but from what I've read I don't believe that
CS POW's were given much chance to pilfer the dead by their captors... something that might be patently unsafe to the captors. Keep in mind that it was July in PN, not only hot but ****ed hot. Bodies tend to get pretty fragrent as does the gear wrapped around them. I can't say that I've read too many accounts of
CS troops dropping packs prior to the fight. All things told those men do not look too heavily laden, it almost looks like they were asked to hold still for a photo before they were all packed up and ready to fall in for the march to Baltimore. Though, I think I would have passed on a rude meeting in any back ally w/ those three men.
