Shane just saw your post . I wonder how ythe dates ever got confused to begin with..

But Since the AC is Always correct they must be right..

(While coughing . . Bull Sh*t) lol

I have a great deal of respect for some of those there while otheres think they are re enacting Gods and know it alls.. .

Maybe the Items are props for the photographer ? Or like Brett said might be extra stuff to go off to prison.

Here Steve, have a hankie; no the AC isn't perfect but the argument was conclusive enough to convince me. Desjardin mentions the photo in in his work These Honored Dead and I may have goofed up the date. I'm not above transposing or dropping numbers by accident and cdertainly not above admitting I might have done so.

I don't think that the items were props of the photographer, they may well be battlefield salvage but from what I've read I don't believe that CS POW's were given much chance to pilfer the dead by their captors... something that might be patently unsafe to the captors. Keep in mind that it was July in PN, not only hot but ****ed hot. Bodies tend to get pretty fragrent as does the gear wrapped around them. I can't say that I've read too many accounts of CS troops dropping packs prior to the fight. All things told those men do not look too heavily laden, it almost looks like they were asked to hold still for a photo before they were all packed up and ready to fall in for the march to Baltimore. Though, I think I would have passed on a rude meeting in any back ally w/ those three men.

Gentlemen:

Amazingly insightful. Can't say how many times I've looked at that picture and saw nothing but 3 Confederate prisoners. It's analyses like yours that makes this board so valuable. There's always something. Now if I could learn how to be that perceptive...

Ole,
like you I have seen that picture hundreds of times just saw 3 prisoners . But resently I have been looking at period photos to get a better feel of what to wear & how to wear it whille reenacting

Thats when I came across a bigger photo of the 3 prisioners.. You see either a bed roll or Knap sack but not the two put together which struck me as being very unusual

the more I learn the less i really know it seems lol

Smile Indepth look into the past

After looking at this picture in the past, i have concluded that the middle man is wearing a federal double bag(like concluded)or by the look of the straps it also looks like the mex. war pattern Kibler soft pack. I love this picture because when i protray confederates i can use the photo to base what i want to wear to an event near the time of gettysburg. I have worn the knapsack/blanket roll combo and its quit comforting. it alows for either more stuff in your knapsack or maybe less weight with the blanket out or maybe in the colder months you can carry an extra blanket. You can use so many tecniques to wear your gear in comfort but there only so much time to do it because we are not in the field wearing it for 365.25 days a year. The best place i think to test gear for its durability and comfort zones is believe it or not but Film shoots... THey put a wear and tear like no other on gear because your wearing it and using it for weeks or months on end...
