Cap: I've seen examples of the brick tea, sugar, etc. from the period. For the military, storage and transportation of wrapped bricks would certainly be preferable to bags, tins, boxes, etc.

Having stated my opinion that they certainly did use tea in the brick form, you may be assured that they most certainly did not.

If it's not refrigerated in the store then you don't have to keep it that way. They have some good cured pieces in your super market near the spot where they have country ham

Even if it is refrigerated, you can keep it on ice until you get to camp. It will last at outdoor temperatures for a few days (especially if you cook it). Besides, a little rancidity will add an authentic flavor to your experience.

I know I have kept a few packs of salt pork on ice as well as some hoop cheese. I know it will keep for a few days but the less time in the out side temp the better.
A few years back I had left a cooler with some salt pork in the back of my truck for a week after and event. It stunk so bad I threw away the cooler and got a new one.
