Red face Thunder Valley

A spectator came up to me Sunday and gave me this pic from Saturdays battle at Thunder Valley Civil War Days - near McKean, PA. I'm not sure why, but it seems all pics of me at reenactments have my mouth open....

Ray,

Isn't an officer, ANY officer, always supposed to have his mouth open?

Respectfully,

I think they're trying to tell you something there Ray :-)
But great pic. You must do other senarios as well as the Zouave one that is in your bio picture?

Jenna

Once a Zouave always a Zouave.

Zouave officers could wear somewhat plain (by comparison) Uniforms. What you do not see in the pic is the gaudy gold braid on the sleeves of the jacket. It's a Zouave thing

Ray,

Ever work with or reenact with the 54th OVI, the Ohio Zouaves?

there are two 54ths in reenacting. One is a part time group who does another non-Zouave impression. The other is full time 54thOVI. I founded and commanded that one until about two years ago. pic of that one follows

So Ray, then was it only the Confederate Zouaves that wore those big baggy 7 day pants that were striped? I know I had read or heard somewhere that the Union Zouaves donned the Union blue at some point during the war, losing their identity a bit. Is that true?

Jenna

Oh, by the way, nice group pic!

There is a myth that Zouaves lost their uniforms as the war progressed but it is not true. I am sure some did, but many did not

As to the baggy pants, thats mostly out east, as Zouaves progressed west, like Ohio, the uniform toned down a bit.

As to the stripped pants, the only one that wore em that way were the Tiger Rifles, one company of Wheats 1st Special Battalion. Others were all solid colors as far as I know.

Also in most, not all, Zouave units, officers did not wear that uniform, simply a fancier version of a regular one
