One of the largest Civil War re-enactments in the State of Alabama, according to a recent press release, is set for March 18, 19 and 20th in Bridgeport.
This year’s Siege at Bridgeport marks the 11th annual celebration and will host more than 1,500 soldiers. The celebration will include education, a Gala Ball, non-denominational church services and battles.
The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast will kick off the Siege at Bridgeport festivities on Friday, March 18, 2005, at 7:30 a.m. The guest speaker of the Early Bird festivities will be Senator Lowell Baron. Civil War era musical entertainment will also be provided during the breakfast by Martin Lieberschener.
Soon after the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Early Bird Breakfast, area school students will be able to attend live demonstrations and exhibits. Students will view such presentations as artillery fire, infantry fire and tactics, food preparation, music and flags that were used during the war. Students will also hear a welcome speech made by Captain Steve Gipson. More than 1,000 students are expected to participate in the School Day presentation this year.
The camps will open to the public on Saturday, March 19. Spectators will enjoy live music, anvil shoots throughout the day, battle re-enactments, a Gala Ball and fire works display. The battles, with 25 cannons, a large infantry and cavalry, will take place at 2 p.m. CST. Saturday evening, fireworks show will take place and will last over an hour. The night will end with a Gala Ball that will feature such entertainment as the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment Band from Tuscaloosa.
