Siege at Bridgeport set for next weekend
The Daily Sentinel - Published March 14, 2005

One of the largest Civil War re-enactments in the State of Alabama, according to a recent press release, is set for March 18, 19 and 20th in Bridgeport.

This year’s Siege at Bridgeport marks the 11th annual celebration and will host more than 1,500 soldiers. The celebration will include education, a Gala Ball, non-denominational church services and battles.

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast will kick off the Siege at Bridgeport festivities on Friday, March 18, 2005, at 7:30 a.m. The guest speaker of the Early Bird festivities will be Senator Lowell Baron. Civil War era musical entertainment will also be provided during the breakfast by Martin Lieberschener.

Soon after the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Early Bird Breakfast, area school students will be able to attend live demonstrations and exhibits. Students will view such presentations as artillery fire, infantry fire and tactics, food preparation, music and flags that were used during the war. Students will also hear a welcome speech made by Captain Steve Gipson. More than 1,000 students are expected to participate in the School Day presentation this year.

The camps will open to the public on Saturday, March 19. Spectators will enjoy live music, anvil shoots throughout the day, battle re-enactments, a Gala Ball and fire works display. The battles, with 25 cannons, a large infantry and cavalry, will take place at 2 p.m. CST. Saturday evening, fireworks show will take place and will last over an hour. The night will end with a Gala Ball that will feature such entertainment as the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment Band from Tuscaloosa.

On Sunday, non-denominational church services will be held. A memorial service will also be held Sunday morning to honor family members and ex-slaves who served and are buried in the Williams Family Cemetery. Battle re-enactments will begin at 2 p.m.

The public is invited to attend all scheduled events. For more information contact Glenn Hill at (256) 495-3614 or JoJohn McCraw at (256) 437-8873. You can also visit www.siegeatbridgeport.com or www.bridgeportal.org

Steven,

Enjoy yourself as it looks like you are off to a great start for your reenacting year.

Still planning to go to Shane's Stone Mill event in Iowa in May?

Unionblue: Does your unit participate in any of the events in NY? My friend's boyfriend is a reenactor, so I'm hoping to get involved through him. I'm not sure which unit he's with, but he participates in the events up around Buffalo/Amherst/Eden. Also, his unit is going to Elmira at the end of April, and since that's near where I went to college and I have friends out there, I might attend that.

cwrose,

I am not aware of any event that my unit(s) attend this year in NY. I used to be posted at Ft. Drum NY near Watertown, but that's when I was in the real Army in 1989-1991!

Wt_Jimbo,

No problem with saving the picture of me in my 'Jeremiah' beard. Just don't show it to small children or you could be taken to jail for displaying a deadly weapon!
