Shane,

I am starting to make plans to make it to this event. I want to make sure of the facts and dates. From what I gather, the event will be held on May 20-22, 2005.

This will be a living history event mainly, am I right? As of right now, I can bring three tents if you need them, a dog, an A tent, and a large wll tent with fly is any one needs it for pay call or to double as an officers tent. Just let me know, otherwise, I will only bring my dog and A tent to show folks the difference between the two, if needed.

I also have numerous display items, from a civil war ketchum grenade, to books and papers of the period to include personal items and weapons and chains and such.

I will also bring both a Union and Confederate uniform so that you may decide on any scenario you wish to conduct.

A current address to the Mill would help me in creating a road map to the site, if not, could you please provide directions from Elkader town center.

Anything else?

Sincerely,
Unionblue

THis is the Cooper which will be the hospital, as the walls are stone and already covered w/ grafitti the doctors will likely be quite enthusiastic... as long as they remember to clean up afterward.

THe date is set for the weekend of May 22, 2005. There are no fees of any type required for the event however, the public is encouraged to give a freewill donation to help support the Mill site restoration and upkeep. NO[i][u] rations will be provided, however firewood and potable water will be. The site is only 7 miles from the oldest grocery in Iowa so rations will be readily available.

If family is in need of modern camping facilities there are two campgrounds on the east side of Elkader with hookups for campers, both require a modest fee.

There are several other very nice historical sites w/in a 30 minute drive of Elkader. Effigy Mounds is the largest collection of Native American Burial mounds in the country, located just a few miles north of Marquette Iowa. The Vilas Louis is an antebellum mansion that proves a man could make a fortune in the fur trade, it is truly a must see. There is also the Ft Crawford Military museum, which is a nice look into a Mississippi River fort there is also a medical museum . All three are in Prarie Du Chien Wisconsin a short thirty minute drive from Elkader.

THe Motor Mill site itself is 7 miles from Elkader on the Turkey River, only power lines, modern signage and landscaping materials detract fron the mid 19th century experiance. A single house from the early 20th century is a distraction that can be easily ignored.

Driving directions from Elkader are as follows: Proceeding from Highway 13, North or South bound, turn east onto C1X/Grape Rd (this is a pretty twisty gravel road) proceed until Galaxy Rd and proceed South until the mill site is reached. THe civilian camp will be approx 150 yards past the mill on the right side of the road adjacent to the Turkey River, the Military camp will be on the other side of the road. Depending upon attendence there will be from 1-3 Company streets. Civilian camp will be constructed to preference.

CCCB (Clayton County Conservation Board) personnel will have the last word on any disputes that may arise, alcohol will be allowed in moderate amounts in period containers only all others will be disposed of.

Shane Christen is the individual who got this rolling so he will be the liason between the CCCB and re-enactors.

Please feel free to contact me through PM or email.

Company C had suffered 12 KIA and 37 WIA by the time we are portraying in this event. Their flag carried numerous battles honors including Blue Mills, Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Jackson.

The Fallen as of re-muster:

Baird, Robert Jackson
Dennison, William Shiloh
Dix, Harvey Kirksville
Fulton, Hugh disease
Lyons, John disease
Mcloon, Barney Shiloh
Mack, John disease
Stamm, John Jackson
Stephensen, William Vicksburg
Tappen, James disease
Wakefield, Lorenzo Vicksburg
Warren, Ezra Jackson

I am hoping to have a Sunday service and a 21 gun salute over the Turkey River to honor the fallen of the Clayton County w/ the 3rd IA.
