.....though I happen to live and work in North Carolina. Prior to my present job I worked in Bavaria for the US Army. Loved Germany but my boss (**hack** **hack**) was another matter so I came home.
I found the forum last week when I was researching a quote someone had attached to a youtube video I made. The quote was attributed to General Grant: "If I thought this war was over slavery I would turn in my sword and go over to the other side." A post here gave me the starting point to look for information.
It looked bogus and I said so and was immediately hammered by one character who insisted it was in the Library of Congress. The librarian who contacted me was highly skeptical of it's authenticity. I had already located the original source on Google books and had satisfied myself it was a fabrication-----but still a lot of fun.
Being a librarian myself, I have interests in several areas but having grown up in Lawrence, Kansas during the centennial of the war it wasn't something you could miss.
Yes, I'm that old.
Oddly enough, I was also born in Beloit, Kansas so "bones" and I have something in common.
Hope you will find it welcoming, informative and inspiring.
Please take your time and feel comfortable. Don't feel pressured to post and or not post. We, in a general sense, are inquisitive bunch.
There are word filters that sometimes baffles the mind; so --when a bunch of stars shows up *** that might mean you must go back and see what is triggering and then 'toss' the correct spelling/English and add a hypen or something to break up the spelling so it doesn't trigger. Its in the software/program--not the moderators. So; just giving a heads-up; so you do not think there is a personal issue, etc.
Let me add my welcome as well. We look forward to your contributions.

dbc1951,
Good to have you aboard. Which part of Bavaria did you come from? It is all truly beautiful country. I miss my days of skiing/kayaking/hiking in the area.

I worked in Bamberg from 2003 to 2006. It is a beautiful area indeed and I was surprised at how much the surrounding areas reminded me of Northeast Kansas farm lands.
Interestingly enough, the post where I was at was where Claus von Stauffenberg began his military career in 1926. The Germans only recently began to honor the men of 20 July 1944 in earnest. That, together with discovering that what ancestors I had over here in 1776 were Loyalists, has given me some interest In Southern Unionists and what they went through.
Welcome. I am sure you will enjoy it here> I have visited North Carolina.Beautiful stae. My niece just enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Wilminton.

I seem to recall Bamberg as engineer country - of course I was with VII Corps of Engineers at the time. I did go to a lot of children T-ball games there.
Berchesgarden began remembering them way back when. Never forget walking into a gaushaus in 1981 to find several Nazi flags decorating the walls.
My GreatGGrandfather was a Union loyalist. With the script he offered up, he was paid handsomely at the end of the war. He lived in Rome, GA.
