Not sure what to say about myself. I'm twenty-two, been interested to some degree or another in the Civil War for maybe up to ten years of that. Born and raised in Northern California, visted Gettysburg and part of northern Virginia once. Not sure if I'll go back, not much for flying long distances.
Mostly into the Eastern theater, though always curious about the West and the naval aspects of the war.
I'm a very firm Unionist in my sympathies, but there were good and bad on both sides, and I try to recognize both.
First got into reading about the Civil War from reading about railroads (in the days of steam).
Well, that's about all that's relevant. Hope to drink deep from the well of knowledge and meet people well worth knowing.
Hello from Central Texas. Welcome aboard. This is a great site. I've been a member for a short time and have learned quite a bit.

There is much to explore on the site, a lot of links to help explore your passions.
Just want to let you know; there is a built in profanity buster in the software that moderators aren't in control of; so even if it is very factual, historical spelling and such; it nabs the naughty words its programmed with. Its out of my hands per se; so just read over your posts and respell cleverly the word that is being stuck in the rubbish can via key word triggers. (It isn't personal )
We do have a wide range in ages--so; its wonderful to see everybody comfortable in discussing history.
Just go at your own pace and do not feel there is a quota system in posting. It is better to post quality instead of quantity. We're an inquisitive bunch of folks and everybody learns from one another.
Allow me to be the THIRD Texan to welcome you to the site (there is a reason we are called the "friendship state").
It is good to have you aboard. Another new member expressed an interest in the naval aspects of the war. Perhaps we can get some good discussions going.

What part of nawthin California are you from? There are Civil War Round Tables all over including one in Sacramento, Stanislaus County, Santa Rosa, San Francisco, San Mateo Couny (Penninsula CWRT) and South Bay (San Jose). G'wine one (or all)! In the first week of October, the Friends of Civil War Alcatraz is hosting Civil War day on the island. We hope to bring 100 reenactors out there to interpret the island's history as a Civil War fort. Its career as a prison was only 29 years and for the majority of its existence it served as a fort guarding the SF Bay Area. Go to Friends of Civil War Alcatraz for more info.
Most of my life: Benicia. Currently residing in Santa Cruz (Soquel technically).
Shame to be out of the Bay Area (well, the immediate San Fransico Bay Area) when something like this is happening there. As I don't drive (I live at home), visting might be a bit of a hassle.
Thank you all. Looking forward to soaking up information like a sponge, and hopefully contributing some useful stuff as well. The amount written in some form or another on the war is truly staggering. Probably more ink spilled than blood, I would venture to say.
