Joined yesterday after all sorts of fun with those anti-spam numbers and letters. But, kept at it, and finally succeeded.
I got interested in the Civil War at age 7 when my dad took me to Fort Fisher, NC, and explained that the war was fought between the North and the South. We were living in North Carolina at the time and from school, I knew that we lived in North America. "Dad, then we were for the North," says I.
"No," says he. He went on to explain and from there, I was hooked. Then came the Civil War Centennial and this young lad was even more hooked.
I'm primarily interested in Fort Fisher (still), blockade-running, and anything naval. But, then again, it can be anything Civil War.
Hey, Road Dog. Very much appreciate your avatar. One doesn't often get off into the gravel and dirt roads without having a road dog drive you off his territory. The problem is in not running the beast over. But he'll go home, secure in the knowledge that he's driven off another invader. So he doesn't understand why one would object to his practice of driving off invaders. He won. What else matters?
Lots of stories behind that memory.
Never mind. Always good to have another sucker on board.

I hadn't thought of my pooch as a car-chaser, but that sure brings back memories of drives. Always worry about hitting them, but the dogs know exactly how far then can go. I wonder what they'd do if they ever "caught" a car. Plus, I'm sure when they "drive" you off, they experience the "thrill of victory."
Actually, this one has his tongue out and is just running for the fun of it (or so I think), which is what I do.
I'm a big fan of all US and state roads, especially the Big Three.
Welcome aboard, Dog! I'm about 2 hours from Ft. Fisher.
I often visit my family in Goldsboro, NC, which is about two hours away as well. Also like to catch up on my "cue" when there (Wilber's). Nothing like Eastern Carolina 'cue, unless its a Britt's Donut at Carolina Beach unless its listening to some good Beach Music (and I don't mean Beach Boys stuff).
I just came from Carolina Beach about a week ago. Britt's Donuts are the best in the world. We stay at Cherry Grove in SC, but we make the trek to Britt's whenever possible. Can't get enough of that sugar, lard and carbs, you know.
Oh, OK. I'll concede that Wilber's is good, I guess. But if ever you get to Lexington, try the Barbecue Center.
I'm with you on the 'nuts, but I can't agree on the 'cue. I'm Texas born and bred. You have no idea how much I miss a really good brisket! And I can never find time to smoke one myself.

Now, diddy, if you really want to start a ciil war, start talking about who has the best barbeque. Of course, I hold that no one can come close to the brisket or sausage in Lockhart, or the beef ribs at the Ironworks in Austin. After all, everyone knows that real barbeque is made with beef.

Don't look now but here's another Texan...just living in NC. Glad to have you. I just smoked a brisket for 15 hours last weekend. Brisket and Texas go together like pick-ups and open beverage containers....LOL
