You can thank Ole for recruiting me, too. Apparently he's got way too much time on his hands. Or maybe I do. Been languishing on another board that seems to be treading water lately. So now I decided to take the plunge here, so to speak.
Have cultivated an interest in the Civil War since childhood, an interest which began nearly half a century ago for me. Yikes.
My user name is my way of paying homage to an ancestor, William Clewell, who fought with the 153rd PA, 11th Corps. Yeah, yeah, I know. But how many guys do you know actually admit to having a relative in the 11th Corps? William was a nine-month volunteer who saw action at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg before being mustered out. He was also a regimental musician, so when he wasn't running away from Jackson and Gordon, he played the tuba. I have no idea what he did after the war. Probably told tall tales.
I'm retired, like to read, play golf, putter around in the garden. Although I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, I've spent the last 30 years or so in North Carolina. That has allowed me to visit most of the CW battlefields in the eastern theater. You can also throw in Shiloh, Nashville, Franklin and Stones River for good measure.
After so many years in the South, I've somehow acquired a taste for grits. Imagine that.
I'll be going to Gettysburg in a few weeks to attend the week-long Civil War Institute for the 17th consecutive year. I guess I like it there.
You can ask Ole if you don't believe any of this stuff. He'll vouch for me.
Welcome. And even though I have lived nearly all my life in the South and married a Cajun who cooks grits on a regular basis, I still don't like 'em.

Am SO glad to see you've dipped your oar in here, Enlisted Man.
For those who don't know, Pvt. Clewell doesn't quite match his perspicasicty. Or something like that. I've been trying to get him to accept general or admirable, but he sticks with the private thing. Never mind that he chases little white balls over greenswards. Don't make you all bad.

I was born in NC and lived there until 6th grade and have lived all but the rest of my years here in Illinois, but still go back to NC to visit family in Goldsboro and Mt. Olive. I need my bbq fix right along with CW fix.
Are you a member of the Sons of Union Veterans?
I'm retired as well and spend time out in the garden at least an hour a day.
I live in Lexington, where pork barbecue, as you may know, is more than just tonight's meal, it's life itself. We have an annual Barbecue Festival in October that last year brought 170,000 people to our little town with a population of 20,000.
But then, I guess you're an eastern barbecue guy, huh? Well, welcome to the board anyway.
I am not a SUV, just a buff.
Only one hour per day in the garden? I need that much time just to pull the weeds. It's far more fun to play golf.
Some of you other folks have heard about the unpleasantries betwee North and South back in the 19th century, but that has now been replaced with the war between East and West in the state of NC, the home of that great Carolina-style BBQ.
One of the first things I had to learn when I moved to NC was that I had to join up immediately with the Lexington-style BBQ faction, otherwise I'd be deported to, oh, say Greenville, Tarboro or Goldsboro.
By the way, the town of Shelby say's it's Lexington-style BBQ is better than Lexington's, if you can believe that. So there's even some dissent within the Lexington-style ranks.
RoadDog says: " rest of my years here in Illinois,". Not knowing exactly the area you live in, am wondering how close to Decator are you. And, have you any intention of attending the CW symposium at Arthur, IL, June 14??
Chuck in IL.
