My interest in the Civil War dates back several years, and I suppose it has developed into something close to an obsession. Now and then I try to read books that have nothing to do with the CW, but I never get very far before I start feeling lonely for the generals.
I'm retired, and a grandparent, so I have a lot of time to spend on things I like. And I'm a Yankee, born and bred, but I try not to be obnoxious about it.
In my personal Civil War library I have somewhere around 180 books, although I have to confess I haven't read them all yet. Although I tell myself I'm going to start reading the oldest books first, every time I get a shipment of new ones they just look so interesting I can't resist them. Currently, I am reading "House of Abraham." I've never known much about Mary Lincoln and the Todds, and this book is quite informative.
I'm also a blogger with a focus on the current political situation we are facing. I'm an unapologetic Democrat and am very concerned about the direction we've been heading in for the last seven-plus years.
My favorite parts of the CW are the people who were involved in it. Descriptions of the battles are still difficult for me to visualize.
I'm also working on a Civil War web site, and finding it is perhaps a more ambitious project than I can manage. The big problem is that when I start doing research, I become so fascinated with what I'm reading that I forget to make notes and just immerse myself in the text. It really slows down the process.
The reason I finally decided to register here is because I don't personally know anyone who is interested in the Civil War. My family and friends tend to get that glazed look on their faces when I start talking about the war, and although they are too polite to ask me to stop, their expresions are a clear message that they're bored silly and annoyed. So I figure that, here, you can put up with me.
And that's who I am and why I'm here.
