Default Introducing Me

My interest in the Civil War dates back several years, and I suppose it has developed into something close to an obsession. Now and then I try to read books that have nothing to do with the CW, but I never get very far before I start feeling lonely for the generals.

I'm retired, and a grandparent, so I have a lot of time to spend on things I like. And I'm a Yankee, born and bred, but I try not to be obnoxious about it.

In my personal Civil War library I have somewhere around 180 books, although I have to confess I haven't read them all yet. Although I tell myself I'm going to start reading the oldest books first, every time I get a shipment of new ones they just look so interesting I can't resist them. Currently, I am reading "House of Abraham." I've never known much about Mary Lincoln and the Todds, and this book is quite informative.

I'm also a blogger with a focus on the current political situation we are facing. I'm an unapologetic Democrat and am very concerned about the direction we've been heading in for the last seven-plus years.

My favorite parts of the CW are the people who were involved in it. Descriptions of the battles are still difficult for me to visualize.

I'm also working on a Civil War web site, and finding it is perhaps a more ambitious project than I can manage. The big problem is that when I start doing research, I become so fascinated with what I'm reading that I forget to make notes and just immerse myself in the text. It really slows down the process.

The reason I finally decided to register here is because I don't personally know anyone who is interested in the Civil War. My family and friends tend to get that glazed look on their faces when I start talking about the war, and although they are too polite to ask me to stop, their expresions are a clear message that they're bored silly and annoyed. So I figure that, here, you can put up with me.

And that's who I am and why I'm here.

Think you're the only one with that Problem?? LOL Serious problem here, expecially if one of the new books relates to a topic I'm studing.
170 books is a nice start, but be very carefull, many of the members here will gladly share their book sources, and the 170 will soon be buried under the additions you will Find you Can't live without.

A site can be fun, while being a pain in keeping it up.
Is yours up yet, and if so, whats the addy.
I have a small site where I post photos from CW musters and local
re-enactments I get to. Just posted some photos of a mini-muster members of another online group I belong to) to Fort Wayne to visit the Abe Lincoln Museum before it closes.

Welcome Jules! I think you find this site a regular visit for you. It is fun and informative and I agree with Mobile.....start saving your money and finding more room for books because I know this site has led me to purchase quite a few volumes!
Democrat...hmmm Obama, Clinton or as I am finding out with many a Dem...McCain!?

Default Thank you for the welcomes

Timewalker: Omana is in eastern Nebraska, right across the bridge from Council Bluffs, Iowa. I usually call it Omaha, but at 2 a.m., roughly the time I registered here, it's a miracle I didn't call it Denver.

Mobile - I'm always up for new books and appreciate suggestions since, left to my own devices, I've made some colossal mistakes.

Oscoda and 30th_il- Don't hold it against me. I'm a moderate liberal and as a child, was taught to mind my manners. I will probably never mention my political preferences again...other than to praise Abraham Lincoln, and defend President Grant, both Republicans.

OK for you, Jules. At the time, the Republican party was the liberals. The Democrats were the conservatives. Not entirely sure when that all switched, but it did.

Somebody tell John McCain that the party of Lincoln was the progressive party.

Jules,

Welcome to the board.

I hope you enjoy your time with us, but I must warn you.

I voted for Bush.

Twice.

Sincerely,
Unionblue
