Hello all,
I just joined a short while ago and thought its about time I'd join the conversations. I am originally from Baltimore (go O's) but my parents moved to Houston during the 80's oil boom. I live in Houston but work in Galveston. As a boy I visited the eastern battle fields and was fascinated by the cannons and monuments. I would read all I could find about those places. All that took a back seat when I moved to Tx. Back in 2003 my wife and I visited familiy in Baltimore and visited Gettysburg. It was the first time I had been there since I was about 8. It was like I was a kid again and the obsession returned and I have been reading one book after another ever since. I must point out that I am lucky enough to have a wife that shares my passion for history. She has no problems taking vacations to places like Shiloh or Mansfield. I also enjoy photography and have started to photograph all of the civil war graves in Galveston and surrounding areas. I have come across some nice discoveries, like John Magruders (of the defence of Yorktown fame) is in Galveston as well as some MOH winners, and a Georgia fella who carried his regiments Colors at Gettysburg. I will be travelling to Vicksburg next month for April Park Day. It will be my first time there so if anyone knows of any "can't miss sites" please let me know. I will be also Going to Gettysburg over for the annual festivities in November. I've talked too long so I'll sign off for now. Until then keep your powder dry.

Glad to meet you. Check out the Vicksburg site in the Western Theater Message board - also I like to stay at the Battlefield Inn - It's clean, right at the battlefied and you can get free cocktails at 5:00!
Welcome; please paruse the forums at your leisure and jump right in. Nobody here bites... at least I don't think so.

In central Texas there is a spectacular cliff where the highway drops from scrubland down to desert. There is a fort at the bottom of this cliff, which runs north-south for as far as I could see.
Regretfully I didn't have time to stop and explore and don't recall the name of the fort. Do you know of this place? Was it CW or Indian War era?
Hope your time spent with us is fulfilling and productive. I've learned an awful lot of useful stuff from these folks in the last three years or so. While perhaps not pretty, some of the gentlemen are pretty sharp and very knowledgeable. We welcome your input. Couple of the ladies know so much civil war history, it's a good thing they didn't live in the era when the combat was going on!
