Default Greetings From WNC, Eh!

Greetings all,

I'm a Canadian that has settled here in Western North Carolina, Hendersonville actually. Before moving here I retired from the Army Reserves after 23 years. I've recently joined the 25th NCT reenactor unit near here and I' looking about for all the sites that can provide me with information on the hobby. I've always been interested in military history and this was a great opportunity to live the history of the ACW. I'm looking forward to getting to know the folks here.

Retired from the 'Candian Reserves' or what? How long been in the states? How could you bypass Chicago to settle in N. C., doncha miss those Canadian Winters?

Well, I always say "Canadians are just like Americans, only nicer."

Some folks take exception to that, the not-as-nice ones, I suspect.

I've been in the states for a little over three years now. It was the Canadian Reserves I served with, the Militia as we call it. I'm from PEI, on the east coast, so Chicago is waaay out there and just as bloody cold. There are a good many similarities between you folks and us from "The Great White North", just as there are as many differences. On the whole, we're alike in a lot of things except our beer is better.

Welcome to the board Ernie. Since you're in Naw 'Clina, be sure to visit those battlefields in Virginny and Naw 'Clina. Heck, plenty o' sites to see in Sowt 'Clina too. Colombia is suppose to have some excellent resources to go through for original research. UNC must be a goldmine in and of itself. Lucky you. I'm stuck out here in California where all we did wuz chaze the N-D-Ns and shake in our boots whenever an unidentified ship approached. Oh Dear! It's the Shenandoah. She's come to capture our gold and raze our city. Boo hoo!

Default Beer

Well, I do strickly choose Labatts when I go up north in Michigan. Can't find it except in specialty stores (over priced) here in Chicago.

Tho it may be a pedestrian choice for you Canadians, it sure beats Bud and Miller.

MMMM Beer! A subject dear to me heart. Labatt's Blue, "Blue" to us, is a darn popular choice. I can get it here at the local grocery stores for less than a buck a bottle! Although, due to my eastern origins, I much prefer Maritime beer to the central Canadian "imports". LOL

Is "Maritime" a brand or a generic geographical designation for a few local breweries? Am familiar with only a few Canuck imports (Labatt's Blue being a favored one), but have no concept regarding "maritime."

Ole,

The term maritimes refers to the Maritime Provinces. They are New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. I'm from PEI myself. Folks from there are known as Maritimers. There are a lot of beers produced by Maritime breweries, probably the best known would be Moosehead. I know that is exported, I've seen it in the stores here. A lot of the rest aren't exported, even outside the maritimes. Darn shame that, I'd love a Keith's right now LOL

Well said, Bernie. As a damyankee, I am unaware of "local" Canadian beers -- just those big enough to break through the borders. I am familiar with Moosehead but am equally unaware of its origin -- just somewhere north of Minnesota. On the other hand, I do appreciate Mexican beer. You'd think the mightiest nation on earth could make a decent beer. Dream on, oh Columbia. Your best doesn't come close to the imports.
Ole
