Default Newbe from Texas

[size=1][font=Times New Roman]Howdy y’all. I am a new comer to neighborhood and I am just getting started in reenactments. I would like to tell you a bit about myself. I have at least one known Confederate veteran on my mother side and four known on my fathers side. Two died in the War for Southern Independence. One is in a cemetery at Rock Island Prison Camp. I know little about the Veterans on my father side only that they were all privates in the war and they came to Texas right before the war began. Folk stories has it they quickly left Alabama to escape the law. Something about folks not appreciating them for stealing their horses. Don’t know if its true but it makes for a good story. So I take it they could not afford to own slaves. The one on my mother side who was a doctor and ran from his home after the war by carpetbaggers did own slaves. So why would they go fight for something that only a select few could afford? I may have one that fought for the North (I guess theres one black sheep in every family ).The victorious get to write history. The North would like to be remembered as the savior of the Union and the moral ones who went to war to end slavery. It seems though that Lincoln had trouble at the beginning to get anyone to back him in the war effort. He had to send soldiers into Missouri, Maryland, and Kentucky to remind those folks whose side they were on. It wasn’t till the impatient South took Fort Sumter that gave Lincoln what he needed. Lets not forget the top General for the North had slaves (oops I forgot they belonged to his wife ). I really enjoy reading about the western campaigns like The Red River Campaign, Indian Territory, New Mexico, and battle with the Cottonclads in Texas. I proudly fly Old Glory and Texas flags at my house along with my third Confederate National Flag and I do not care who it offends (including my wife who is a Yankee and she reminds me who won when I put it up).

bill1957,

Welcome to the board and the debate of the War of the Rebellion, the Civil War's offical name, as it was the victor who finally determined the title of such (War for Southern Independence always gives me a chuckle, what with those 4 million people being held in eternal bondage and all).

Interesting that you cannot tell if your ancestors ever had slaves or not, as I can tell, mine did (the Southern ones, anyway), and trust me, it was a shock to finally find out. So continue to hold out hope, you never know what a extensive search into your family tree might turn up.

Anyway, welcome, and feel free to join in the ongoing debate concerning the causes and reasons for the War of the Rebellion.

And say hello to your wife for me.

Until next time,
Unionblue

Red face Had a dork moment

Thanks for the words Unionblue.. Ole you are right. After I read what I posted it did sound terrible. I have allways had trouble with first impressions. I try a little to hard. Give us another shot I'm not the dork you make me out to be (maybe a redneck hick) it was failed attempt at humor..

Bill

Welcome Bill, your posts are already appreciated.

I know lots of folks from Texas. Few 'dorks', many 'wackos'.

Well those pesky Union boys won... ran all the way to Appomatox. Being married; I'll put my money w/ your better half. You're getting the short end of the stick no matter how you look at it.

Welcome, hope you enjoy the site.
