Hello,
I have just joined the board following a visit to Virginia. As you can see I am not from the US, so I have chosen an appropriate sign in name. My particular interest at the moment is commerce raiders, but this changes week to week. It seems every time I pick up a book I learn something new about the war and become interested in that subject.

You have uncovered the curse and bane of the study of the Amereican Civil War.
So many books, so little time!
Welcome to the group!

I will echo the replies of my esteemed bretheren; you will find that CW study is both a blessing and curse... a lot like Pringles: once you start you can't stop.

You are not wrong. Since joining the group I have started reading some of the books I brought back from Virginia. 'Company Aytch' is first.
If you ever happen across it pick up A Volunteers Adventures by DeForest... IMHO he was a far superior writer to the likes of Crane and his view of the War from a Company Commanders perspective is quite intriguing. Co Aytch is priceless of coarse tere is also Billings Hardtack & Coffee.

If you can get to the Land o' Rice a Roni & Cable Cars (San Francisco), the Maritime Museum is hosting a talk on the Confederate Raider Shenandoah. It's on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2006 at 6 0.m. at the J. Porter Shaw Library of Fort Mason Centre, Building E., 3rd Floor. For reservations, please call 415-561-7040. Admission is $5.
OK, that is an awfully long commute from England just to hear a talk. Welcome to the board.
Welcome to the forum. Great name. Blockade running was both risky and profitable as you are well aware. A big huzzah to you sir

Our splendid regiment is almost destroyed. We have had nearly 400 men killed and wounded in the battles.
