A belated welcome to you, Blockaderunner.

If you wanted to develop an interest in the American Civil War, Virginia was certainly a wonderful choice of states to visit.

This was my second visit to Virginia, but the first where I concentrated only on visiting Civil War sites. I was impressed with the enthusiasum shown by park staff and with the way the fields are maintained. I just hope the pound stays strong against the dollar so that I can afford to return soon. In the meantime, I have a lot of reading to do. The park bookshops did a good trade while I was there. I have just finished 'Company Aytch' and am half way through the National Park Battlefield Series book on The Wilderness and Spotsylvannia. The Chancellorsville book is next, followed by 'Lees Miserables'. When I get around to it, I also have Gods and Generals, plus The Last Full Measure. I read The Killer Angels years ago, so I hope these two are up to that standard.

Come to Las Vegas next year. The Annual Civil War Naval Conference will be meeting there in the second week of November. Ed Bearss, Craig Symonds, Kevin Foster, Dennis Ringle and Jim Stanbery were among our speakers. I'm no expert but I certainly learned a lot. During the social hours, you can converse with many of these scholars and other knowledgeable individuals about the Late Unpleasantry Between States.

Blockaderunner,

Welcome to CWT. If you are from Newcastle, then you must be of the Northern persuasion. We'll bring you coals for Christmas if you don't give us some of your perspectives on our great war.

Sam

Sam,

Do people in the US really use the old saying 'coals to Newcastle'? During the civil war period, the saying was certainly true. The north east region of England was a massive producer of coal. Also steel, ships and other heavy engineering such as railway locomotives. Armstrong breech loading cannon were made in Lord Armstrongs factory in Newcastle and exported to both sides.
On another historical note, the great ocean liner Mauritania was built a few hundred yards from where I currently live. My house was a shipyard formans house and dates from the 1890's.

You don't hear it all that often, but I'm very much afraid they do.
