John, that's a might fine looking emblem beside your name. Lot's of us ain't quit fightin' the war, cause it ain't over. First round was a bit of a loss to both sides. You'll find some folks here with knowledge worth learning. Climb on board the wagon and enjoy the opportunity these gracious folks afford us to communicate and learn. You'll find most of us are nice, even the yanks.

Welcome... step up hook up! Jump right in. Did a good amount of work w/ 2/505 & 309th Engineers back in the late 90's. Those nuts couldn't convince me to jump out of a perfectly good airplane though; some of the finest soldiers in the world IMHO.

As one of the staunch Union men here, I look forward to exchanging thoughts on all of us 'mercenaries' and such.
Welcome, Reb, and in the words of my beloved Union soldiers of the 30th Ohio, from across the way, I offer this advice.
DOWN REB!
Sincerely,

Good, kind, people. I cherish the time I spent in Missourah. I found no bias (now I'm lying) or bad feelings. We took up with some really fine people and I cannot, to this day, find where they had northern or southern leanings. We just spent some quality time pickin' and grinnin' and fishin' for cats, which usually started biting somewhere close to midnight. (That's why the bait shops sell those little bells.)

I don't hold with the conventional wisdom that says the average soldier was all that up on the politics of the day. The abolition of slavery may have been a hot topic in the cotton exchanges and antebellum plantations, but I don't reckon most folks gave two hoots for the plight of the black man.
Amen, John. They fought because someone pitched a war. Why not go fight? After all, beats sunup to sundown hoin' and diggin' and milkin' and such. I'd guess that somewhere near 8 out of 10 soldiers were in that fracas for some reason other than duty, honor, country.

Welcome... step up hook up! Jump right in. Did a good amount of work w/ 2/505 & 32nd Engineers back in the late 90's. Those nuts couldn't convince me to jump out of a perfectly good airplane though; some of the finest soldiers in the world IMHO.
I have fond memories of 2/505 in Arkansas. My time was with 3rd Brigade in the late 80s and early 90s. 54 times.
Southern leanings and jumps out of perfectly good airplanes? It sorta figures when you think about it!
Twenty years and one day, United States Army, mostly with the Army Security Agency (ASA), Intelligence Security Command (INSCOM), then some tactical time with the 407th ASA Company attached to the 3rd Armored Cav (3rd ACR) in Ft. Bliss, TX, and then a spell up North with the 110th Military Intelligence Battalion (110th MI), 10th Mountain Division. Served some time overseas in Hawaii, Okinawa, Germany, Turkey, and Texas (always considered Texas 'a whole other country.' Nice folks).
Not once was this old Ohio boy crazy enough to leave a perfectly good aircraft. Took off with 'em, and stayed with 'em til they put all the wheels down. But it sounds like its right up a Southerner's alley, to challenge the odds, just for the thrill of doing it.
Welcome, brother.
