A hearty welcome, Admiral Porter, good to have another western campaigner aboard. I'll wager you'll enjoy it here, we all do.
Though a War in the West buff, I'm a Pennsylvanian; as you are a newbie, a Yank, and a fellow Western buff, I'll forgive your terrible slur about Gettysburg . ed

Welcome to the board. Your name shows you have big shoes to fill. Your initial posts show historical knowledge. I look forward to your continued input. I thought of using my great-great uncle's name myself....George Peck; but I'm just a calicoboy at heart. Huzzah!
Calicoboy
__________________ My dear mother:- I have come safely through two more terrible engagements with the enemy, that at South Mountain and the great battle of yesterday (Antietam). Our splendid regiment is almost destroyed. We have had nearly 400 men killed and wounded in the battles. Seven of our officers were shot and three killed in yesterday's battle and nearly 150 men killed and wounded. All from less than 300 engaged. The men have stood like iron....Maj. Another Welcome Admiral. It's always nice to have new blood come in and revisit some threads that had gone stale and breathe some life into them with intellegent/knowledgable/perceptive commentary.

Just don't leave on account of it Admiral... we need the Navy

I hope I have not offended anyone because I see that the "Avengement of South Carolina" thread is steadily going down the toilet.
I think perhaps if that is your view you might pursue other threads rather than pass such a harsh judgment, lest it be construed as offensive.

Admiral, I for one, am enjoying your presence and fresh viewpoint. We must all remember that a slight difference of opinion is the only seed bed for learning. Please hang around and straighten me out. I'm told I have a southern attitude. This is a most interesting and talented crew that has been assembled. Welcome aboard! Some of these folks use big words, but not a problem with me - I can't remember how to spell 'em.
I just joined this forum today and was delighted to learn right from the gitgo that there are others on it interested in CW naval matters!
I reside in New Orleans but am temporarily living in Memphis. We stopped by (misnamed) Confederate Park the other day; also visited Nathan Forrest's final rest. Got lost trying to find Elmwood cemetery, where many Confederate soldiers (and novelist Shelby Foote) are buried.
I just finished reading The Confederate Privateers, by William Morrison Robinson, and have an e-group on the same topic:
