Default My intro

Hi names Peter, I have been a Civil War buff for only 6 weeks. So I am still pretty new at it. I have read many books on the subject including my favorite "The Killer Angels". I am really looking forward to meeting everyone here and being part of this great community.

Thanks

Ok I figure you might want to know a little more about me so here it goes. I have been into military history for a little over eight years. First I started with the second world war and for eight years I was studying that. My interest in the ACW started actually with my college professor when we were talking about the civil war. So the next day I went to the local bookstore close to campus and bought Ken Burns Companion to the PBS series the CIVIL WAR. Since then I have been to Antietam and to Harpers Ferry. I would have to say that Virginia is one of my most favorite places and that I would like to live there some day. Any sugesstions on books or movies are highly appreciated.

Books: If you haven't already, read Bruce Catton and Shelby Foote. James McPherson's 'Battle Cry of Freedom' is also a great one volume treatment.

Actually I just picked up two books today by Bruce Catton. One called Gettysburg and the other called the Civil War. I have read another one by McPherson about Antietam and the Maryland Campaign but can't recall the title.

Thanks

Looks like you are happlily on the 'Civil Wat Nut Road of No Return'.

Good luck. It's a path well taken.

As you said you were into WWII, have you read Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn" about the war in North Africa?

Part one of a projected/delayed trilogy of WWII. It is a seldom mentioned story of how the U.S. first entered the war and how those experiences prepared our forces for the bigger things to come in Europe. Well written.

2nd part supposed to be the move thru the Mediteranian thru Italy, and 3rd part the Northern Europe campaign we are most familiar with.

John Worsham's, "One of Jackson's Foot Cavalry", and Sam Watkin's "Company Aytch" are among my Corn-federate favorite. For the Yankees, it's "How Private Peck Put Down the Rebellion" by George W. Peck (check out our book review section). If you want intellectual books, Sam Grant's Memoirs and E. Porter Alexander's "Fighting for the Confederacy" are must reads.

BTW, welcome to the board. May you have a lifetime of enjoyment studying this fascinating war.
