Default It's all the mod's fault; thanks Steele!

Hello all! I've just entered the CW Reenactment scene. I'm going to my first battle tomorrow. This seems to be a very educational and interesting hobby, and I'm hoping that this first experience is a good one.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and ask you all to go easy on me. I'm a CW newb, and I'm just learning the ropes.

Forest City, IA... Mainstream battle. The poor guy was "volunteered" into the unit, looks like his father has the bug as well. Good to see you on the site Josh.

It was kind of fun, but I can see how it would have been much better if the people there would have had concern for authenticity and... ah... Honor.

The Texas unit we were fighting against did not take hits at all. I saw maybe three or four guys on their side go down. That's it. Just three or four. Maybe I went down too early to see them drop, but the ranges we were firing at were rediculous! I mean, come on, not even one hundred feet and these guys acted like we were holding potato guns.

I, being green as grass, became extremely confused when the Rebs just wouldn't die. I kept asking Corpral Steele if I should take a hit, because it looked like everyone was just shrugging off our vollies.

All in all, it was great, but I wanted something more realistic and dramatic. I wanted to feel the moment. I wanted to be transported back in time to the Civil War. Pfft... The drills did that more for me than the lame battle, although burning powder was fun. I hope we fight more honorable people next time (although I'm not sure Rebs know the meaning of the word ).

Default On the other guy taking hits

We use to say the same thing about the Yankees back in my day. (About the time you were born...same year as my daughter by the way).

A lot of times LH reenactors don't want to go down so quick after driving a long way to get to the site.

Some swear the closest one can come to feeling transported back in time is with a hardcore/total immersion type of unit.

VS...etc

Don't worry Josh; they can only get better. Even as Mainstream battles go that field was pretty poor. too small mofre than anything else.

Many re-enactors will take a hit only when they've run out of ammo... Between the two of us we burned about thirty rounds and we each took hits fairly early as did William... Speaks fairly highly of us. Btw, gut shot... a good excuse to die sitting down leaning against something and drinking plenty out of the canteen. Motor Mill, Cleremont were both far more realistic battles. Kasson will be a Living History event in the middle of a city park w/ a LOT of modern stuff around. Olmstead county will be better but we will be teaching 400 odd students. Maybe we can get you to one of the other better events this year. Welcome to the hobby and think of it this way; it will get only better.

I'll agree w/ VS; the immersion events are the best... Motor Mill will be that next year if I have anything to say about it.
