Talking New around here

I just finished registering a few seconds ago and figured I might as well introduce myself. I am Brett Beeman, but most people know me as Prvt. Donut. I am a new Confederate reenactor in Florida, having joined a unit not more than a few days ago. I have an intense interest in the War Between the States, especially the Rebels. I plan to be a CW Historian or something like that, and I figured reenacting is just one more way to learn. Nice to meet you all and I look forward to my time here.

Brett:

Welcomed you on a different thread. If you plan to be a CW historian, more power to you, but do not be put off by the indifference you will meet. CW nuts are scattered across the country and concentrate only in small groups to talk about their favorite subject.

The numerous boards on the net, especially this one, while not particularly focused, will poke you in many places causing you to run in circles chasing facts and finding a point at which you can put your feet down and start your serious study.

In your study and contact with fellow nuts, be prepared to be lied to, scoffed at, misquoted, having your sources demeaned and having imprecations and implications heaped on you. Don't let that bother you. It was always this way, and you'll not become a serious historian/researcher/author if you let such things get in your way.

I've acknowledged that I've had presented to me the equivalent of graduate degrees in information. From a keen interest in the intricacies of major battles, I've been pulled and yanked from the constitution, legality of secession, qualities and failings of leaders, causes, conclusions, and some silly sidetracks. Give yourself a little time, then decide where you want to plant your feet and see how long you can work in that area without being distracted.

I can afford to be distracted because I'm older than dirt. If you're plotting a path, distractions interfere. That is not to say you can't change your mind somewhere in there and plot another path, but eventually you will need to find a vision of where you want to go.

You picked a good time to start your venture. Modern scholars have all but shed the myths followed by earlier historians. When the CW ended, opinion makers set out to create history to reflect what they thought was best. Societies came together, and sides were once again established. The "Lost Cause" mentality comes to mind in that it attempted to paint the picture of the south as a victim. That worked for a long time. "That the war was fought over slavery" is another story widely told and incorporated into history books.

Welcome Brett Beeman or Pvt. Donut. Might as well start out with thinking critically. Read Robert Krick's, "Smoothbore Volley that Doomed the Confederacy." Krick is no PhD type hysterian but is a recognized and respected authority. Remember, have FUN.

A very hearty welcome, Pvt Donut

And welcome to the board. Good to have another Confederate soldier among us. Prepare yourself for some very interesting 'battles'. Just as in the '60's........and I speak of 1860, we spar quite seriously here. It's all in good comradship though, and I'm sure you will find this board something that will keep you coming back for more. The North will continue to make you out a 'Rebel' and a traiter.........however, we know differently.

Hold on to your beliefs, for certainaly some will try and convince you otherwise, and just as in 1860, it will take a stout heart and strong mind to withstand the buffetings of the adversary. But, we're just as strong in spirit and mind as the northern invaders, and will continue the fight, because we know we're not as wrong as they say we are.

You will find the folks that frequent this board, some of the most interesting and knowledgable anywhere.....................bar none. So prepare for battle my friend, and prepare too, to stand up for what you believe.

With respect,
SgtCSA

Welcome aboard from me also. Nice to have more southern faces about. I hope your interest in the civil war flourishes for many years to come. Shelby Foote needs a successor. Are you interested?
