That isn't the event i was thinking of, but its one I haven't heard of yet, so much thanks! At the Royal Gorge, that sounds like fun, I've been there before. Though the one I am refering to is different, here is a site with some info on the fort its held at, http://www.coloradohistory.org/hist_...ft_garland.htm, (look under the programs link for the event i was talking about) I went to it quite a few years ago when I was like in 5th grade. The one thing I remember the most was how loud the cannons were.

Ironically I just got back from a two week trip out east with my family. Our final destination was Boston, but we managed to put in a stop at Gettysburg and Antietam along the way. We had planned on going to Fredericksburg, Chancelorsville, and Bull Run/Manassas, but we ran out of time and had to cut it short so we hit Antietam instead. I loved it out there, I really fell in love with the Maryland/lower Pennsylvania area and Kentucky. I will most definetly be back later for a visit devoted completely to the Civil War (with my dad in tow... he loves it just as much as me).
Sorry it has taken me so long to say welcome! Hope you enjoy your time here on the boards.
Sincerely,
Unionblue

idlewild,
being a "newbie" myself, you hooked up with a great bunch of folks here and all being helpful and supportive. but keep yer eye on them yankees!!
Welcome to the forum. Glad to hear you visited the East and saw some battlefields. Antietam happens to be one of the best (IMO). Gettysburg is a bit overdeveloped and takes several days to take in. I spent 5 myself and should go back for another day or two - but I'm further west than you are (land o' rice a roni).
I noted that you wanted to read about more activity that is closer to home. Well, that's understandable but don't neglect other theatres as bravery, fortitude, cleverness was germane to soldiers (and some ginerals) in all theatres. I've read plenty about the midwest and the trans-Mississippi as well as concentrated on one particular incident on the eastern seaboard. There's plenty to read and you've a whole lifetime ahead of you. Perhaps we'll read about you as some Chief Historian at a battlefield park someday?
