Hi, over the past couple of years I have become more and more interested in the civil war (reading mostly) from both perspectives.
I recently found out that one of my direct relatives may have played a part (although I do not know how to verify this).
At any rate I recently 'discovered' this website and look forward to participating.
We have a lot of fun here and also get into some serious discussions but in the end, we're all friends, whether we root for the Blue or the Gray.
If you haven't already, may I suggest that in researching your relatives you begin by joining Ancestry.com
There you will be able to post what you know about your relative and soon you will be inundated with valuable information, not just about one relative but about people you never knew existed. The subscription for a year is only $80.00 I believe but, if you're like me, you will find the Civil War relatives within one week and you'll be thirsting for more! I already knew all about my family's branch practically back to Caesar (I'm not kidding) but with my husband, I've only managed to get back to 1750.
But I digress...again, welcome to the boards and we hope to see you contribute your thoughts here often.
Till we meet again, I remain, YMOS,

As I recall, when I visited Manassas battlefield, they had a computer in the visitor center that could verify whether an individual served in the Civil War. All you had to do was tell them the person's name and the state he came from.
Unfortunately, Manassas would be quite a hike for you, but if that sort of facility is available in one place, it's probably available in others.
Welcome to the board! Please feel free to get involved in any of the discussions here on any of the threads provided. It is a lot of fun and at the same time you learn so much from your fellow board members!
Acton, Mass., is it? I was stationed at Ft. Devens once upon a time and had a chance to visit Acton once. Pretty at the time and I still hope so today.
Take care and jump in! The debating water is excellent!
Sincerely,
Unionblue

Thanks for the warm welcome; I do plan on 'listening in' and when I can, will participate....I am currently in the middle of reading Sherman's memoirs...didn't know he was 'there' when gold was discovered in CA..
Unionblue, yes, Acton is still here, but as you may know Ft Devens is not.
Allen, I've just put a post on the Mason-Dixon Gazette board about the information that can be found in pension records. Those records are available in the National Archives, so if you're ever in D.C., you might want to see if you can look up your ancestor there.
Either of the sites below should help you in your search for your ancestors participation. Good Luck & welcome aboard. www.civilwardata.com www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/

Greetings Allen,
I will be happy to check my resources for your ancestor. Please give me his name and include the state he served if you know. I will see what I can find.
Best Regards,
