# Wild Wood Flower — If there were only two folk guitar songs, they would be "Wildwood Flower" and "Under the Double Eagle." Written by A.P. Carter and originally sung by 'Mother' Maybelle Carter, mother of June Carter Cash (Johnny's wife), this is an eternally beautiful song. John Sebastian's cover on "Tarzana Kid",is good, but nothing approaches the scratchy old 78 RPM record of Maybelle Carter's equally scratchy voice and AP's stunning guitar. Not sure about the date of initial release but could find it if needed. I must have 10 or 15 versions of the song myself
And the name is also used in a song concerning the burning of some "weed" by the Feds, while the 2 yokels are sitting on bags of Seed. I have tapes of folk festivals with this song on some of them.

Chuck,

I thought the Carter Family was the first one to record this song. I had some time today and did some searching on the web for "Wild Wood Flower" and found some more information. According to http://www.bobdylanroots.com/wwflower.html, the song was originally known as "I'll Twine Mid the Ringlets" and was written by Maud Irving and J. P. Webster in 1859-'60.

Interesting to think that a song that is so common to many of us has its origins so long ago.
