Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm an aging amateur who was born in Ashe County, North Carolina hardly a hotbed of civil war action. My ancestors were split in their allegiance having served with the 37th NC CSA, 48th VA CSA, 63rd VA CSA, 13th TN US, 5th NC CSA, 3rd NC US and 10th TN US. The 48th and 3rd was gg grandad Rouse who got around. My wife's ancestors served with the 51st GA and 15th AL. I've spent a bit of time reading about both campaigns and am currently working on a brief book concerning the Army of Tennessee from 1864 to end of war.

Hello, Larry, and welcome to the website.

I think we have at least a couple other Tennesseeans here. I know Aphillbilly is one and if I recall correctly, Steven Cone is another.

Hope you enjoy it here. Sounds like you may be able to teach the rest of us a thing or two.

I just spent a pleasant day in Lauderdale County, Alabama in the towns of Lexington and Killen (formerly Masonville) looking for Lauderdale Factory (also known as Baugh's factory) built in 1845, a cotton mill, 3 stories, 125 employees when the war broke out. I found the area which is highway AL 47 running northeast from downtown Florence where it crosses Shoals Creek. Curious if anyone has heard of this place and might be able to zero me in. The 10th TN Cavalry under General Edward Hatch camped here in November of 1864 and again came in pursuit of the army of Tennessee in December 1864. This site is only a few miles north of the Confederate Tennessee River crossing site at Bainbridge Ferry, now under water thanks to the TVA.

Welcome to the board Larry! I have heard of Lauderdale factory. But unfortunately can't zero you in any closer than you already are. Info i have says it located on Shoal creek about 9 miles northeast of Florence on the road to Lawrenceburg.

I was in the area a few years ago and somewhat followed the way the Army of Tennessee went to Nashville.

Brig. Gen. Edward Hatch's two cavalry brigades where sent to reinforce Brig. Gen. John T. Croxton's 1st Cavalry Brigade. With Gen. Hatch taking over command of all the cavalry operations in the area.

They may have skirmised some with Lee's Corp. I know Croxton did on Nov. 5 1864 he was attacked by units from Dea's and Sharp's Brigade oh Major Gen. Edward Johnson Division.

George you are correct I live just east of Nashville, Tennessee.

Regards, Steven Cone

Larry,

Welcome! Sounds as if you will have some interesting stories and information to contribute here to the board, what with you ancestors being divided over the war. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Unionblue
