Robert,
Welcome to the group.
If doing Gettysburg in depth, I recommend as a must read;
"The Gettysburg Campaign-A Study in Command" by Edwin Coddington
The next writer, and a very fine one is
Harry W, Pfanz......
Gettsburg-The First Day
Gettysburg-The Second Day
Gettysburg-Culp's Hill & Cemetery Hill
and he is presently working on a new book on Day 3
Both writers are highly recommended by members of Gettysburg discussion group, which is online with a discussion board and a email discussion group.
Coddington's book is about 1/2 notes, using the official records and is considered The Bible of the battle. The book is also the core material used by the guides at Gettysburg, and is therefore the prime material used in the Guides tests. Have a friend from another group that took the test a while back. Pfanz uses primary material of the OR's, diaries, and letters.
Newer book writers are not really adding much 'new' info to the study of the battle, although some are starting to use material from Gettysburg Magazine. Another great publication,a quarterly, by Morningside Books, having No ads or filler, but are 100-125 pages of maps and text with articles covering the battle, and occassionally the townspeople.Some articles are very controversal, but all are thought provoking.

Welcome to the board. Hope you enjoy your time here and also share your knowledge of the Civil War with us. Good luck with your test.
Does the 3rd USCT have a web site I might visit?
Sincerely,
Unionblue

yes George, I'm hoping to be a LBG at Gettysburg. I've never studied so much of one thing in my life!! My girlfriend is freaking out from tripping over Civil War books. I've always been into the war as a hobby but talk about taking things up another notch.
Had a chance to visit your site for the 3rd USCT. Nicely done, if I say so myself. Are you in any of the pictures posted there?
