change in industry standards? Recently in the Gettysburg Times, I read an article where many of the battlefield guides are opposed to new standards set by the military park regarding scheduling and payment. For many years I have gone to the battlefield and learned a wealth of information regarding the battle itself as well as personal discussions with many guides. While not really understanding why this change is moving to fruition, I personally am opposed to these changes. According to a source from park foundation, there is a change in the industry (battlefield guides) standards. I myself have never had a problem getting to the park by 8am, securing a guide and paying him on the spot after the tour. The guides are independent thus are not employees of the park service. There is a diversity in guides, some are retired on fixed incomes who need to be paid after each tour, others of course hold jobs of their own excluding their tours. My question is, why the change? In my eyes, the park is not losing revenue due to lack of battlefield tourism. Why change something that has been consistant for many years? I believe that this change in industry standards is political. Any thoughts? |
