Thanks very much for the post! I suspect this action has been well conceived and discussed throroughly. While breaking the collection up is a shame, the access and exposure to the public should be greatly increased.

On another board is a bit more detail on the plan. The powers expect to build three museums at a cost of $5 million each (???!!!) One thing is certain: the museum cannot survive where it is. I fault its management. And I'm wondering if this same inept management is making another of a long series of bad decisions.

I'd hope a couple-three senators would move to preserve this national treasure--a bit of pork that I'd welcome.

This will be a big loss to the city of Richmond. I have visited the museum and White House twice. On each occasion this was my only reason for entering the city limits. I am not a big spender. But I stayed overnight twice in Richmond, I ate in Richmond, and spent money in Richmond shops. Probably no more than $100-200 on each visit, but multiply that by several thousand visitors. Richmond is not high on the list of places to visit in the US, and will now slide lower down the list.

It's the statue of Arthur Ashe that draws 'em in.

I'm torn on this one. I'm a native Richmonder and have probably been to the Museum 10-12 times since I was a kid.

I like the idea of doubling the museum space with this move an being able to actually display much more of the collection that the MOC has in storage. The current museum is way too small for what they have in storage and they have to keep rotating displays etc.

Mr Rawls who runs the Museum had an Op Ed in the Richmond paper on Sunday. I will tell you reading between the lines that the 3 new museums will be Civil War museums, not Confederacy specific, and although he did not say it, I would bet my house the name will change as well. This is going to rub some people the wrong way, and feed the perception that he has tried to distance the museum from the term/word/imagery of "Confederacy" since he took over.

Default hmmm...

Okay so now we've gone from "The Museum of the Confederacy is moving" to "The Museum of the Confedreracy is moving and ummm..is "changing it's name by dropping "Confederacy", to NOW being..."The Building and Organization formerly known as "The Museum of the Confederacy (soon to be renamed due to PC, public misconceptions, social and political agendas which will involve a slew of lawyers, and general present age goofiness", will soon be relocating...umm..being split up...errr...moving...being taken apart..."...Well...you get the picture.

And it draws me to remember a quote by a certain president about "a house divided cannot stand..."

For those that supported this action..."Way to go", you've done your country's history a great 'service"...
And now...back to "American Idol" and the latest Britney Story...

My wife said she had heard, though she could not cite any source, that the head of Appomattox Court House National Park had indicated the museum would not be located in the park.

There is, of course, a town of Appomattox, separate from Appomattox Court House. Perhaps the plans are for the museum to relocate there, rather than to the national park.
