It wasn't unusual in Louisiana. Here there was a class of mixed race blacks who were known as free people of color. Some of them were wealthy and socially prominent, and themselves slave owners.
Some years ago in a fit of political (racial) correctness, the New Orleans School Board decided that they would change the name of any school named after a slaveowner (including George Washington). Some schools named after blacks were renamed, after it was discovered that they'd owned slaves.
I'm glad this information is being posted, instead of the popular view that slavery was something whites practised on blacks, the way is was 99.99% of the time. God, it excuses so much.

IT happened quite a bit when white slave owners had affairs with their slaves. The mixed children were usually well taken care of, especially if they wer more fair skinned and you could tell by looking at them they weren't just black. Something alot of people might not realize, is that a child of a white /black relationship could come out either way. He could be black as night or white as snow, and anywhere in between. The white guys would send them off to bording schools and make sure they had whatever was needed so long as nobody found out their dirty little secret. Of course the real paradox was that most people around him probably knew anyways.

Anybody who could afford a slave had one. Kind of like a ***** instead of a Timex. So what else is new?

Didn't know that R o l e x was on the watch (pun intended) list.
