“Two Flags Over Tennessee” Coming to Thompson’s Station, “Two Flags Over Tennessee” Coming to Thompson’s Station,Tennessee
On the Anniversary of the Battle of Thompson’s Station March 5, 2007 On Monday, March 5, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. the Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association (TCWPA) will be coming to Thompson’s Station, Tennessee to sponsor a special program to build greater public awareness of our state’s rich Civil War heritage and the need for preserving Tennessee’s increasingly threatened hallowed ground.
The Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association’s “Two Flags Over Tennessee: Reclaiming Our Civil War Heritage,” is a two-year statewide plan to fly two Civil War-era flags: an 1861 version of the U.S. “Stars and Stripes” featuring 34 stars, and the 11-star, 1861 Confederate “First National” flag, known as the “Stars and Bars,” over all of Tennessee’s most significant Civil War battlefields. The U.S. flag will fly over Union battle positions and the First National flag over Confederate battle positions at as many as 50 sites across Tennessee. The two-year journey crisscrossing the state will be documented in two large scrapbooks collecting and preserving photographs, letters, and news articles from activities and events at each location.
TCWPA is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and interpreting Tennessee's Civil War battlefields for the benefit of present and future generations. "Two Flags Over Tennessee: Reclaiming our Civil War Heritage" will recognize Tennessee's most important battlefields and emphasize the importance of finding ways to preserve this hallowed ground, where thousands of American soldiers, wearing both blue and gray, gave their lives for the causes in which they fervently believed.
On the behalf of State Representative Steve McDaniel, President of TCWPA, we would cordially like to invite you to this special event. Boa rd members of TCWPA will be in attendance, along with members of the local historical community, the media, and town and county officials.
We will meet at the station depot at 4:00 p.m. for a short, fifteen minute program, followed with flying the flags on the historic battlefield.
For more information, please contact TCWPA Vice President Joe Smyth at 615-414-6641 or smyth@vol.com.
