"It's 585 miles from Gettysburg, Pa., and 726 from Vicksburg, Miss., but other numbers tell the story better, city leaders say: 750,000 soldiers from the Upper Midwest marched off to the nation's deadliest war, and 100,000 never came back, accounting for nearly one-third of the Union dead."
My Union ancestors were all Midwesterners (or Westerners, as they called them then.) One fought in an Illinois regiment, one in an Indiana regiment, and one in a Kansas regiment. I'm proud of what they did and proud that they didn't stay home.

(Also proud of my stepson who is preparing for his 2nd tour in Iraq and 4th tour overall, the other two having been in Afganistan. Both areas VERY far from home.)
I'm sure my relatives South Carolina and Texas would have been after yours. I'll pray for your stepson and hope that he returns safely. It seems that when they are needed this nation always produces the wearriors it needs.
Zou, three of my ancestors were in the army with your ancestors. Had they all stayed home, and Congress done it's job, many lives would have been saved. As we all know, sometimes we must get involved in someone else's business. Such has been the case in many world disputes prior to the current one. Our nation stands behind your men and offers our prayers for their continued well being.

Zou, I too hope that yor step son returns safely.
Most of my CW ancestors were westerners.
My paternal ancestors were mostly yankees. My Great grandfather served with the 3rd Missouri Vol. Cav. USA. His brother whith the 35th Illinois Vol. Inf. USA. On the maternal side my people were from Cass County Mo., in the burnt zone, and rode with the Missouri Partisan Ranger CSA.
