GETTYSBURG -- Santa made his entrance into America on Jan. 3, 1863, with a long white beard and cozy suit adorned in stars and stripes. On the cover of Harper's Weekly, famous cartoonist Thomas Nast showed an image of Santa Claus handing out gifts to weary Civil War soldiers.
