In her new history of yellow fever, Molly Caldwell Crosby argues the disease can be seen as a punishment for the evil of slavery. In The American Plague, she notes every European country that profited from the slave trade suffered outbreaks of yellow fever, a viral infection whose name describes the jaundiced skin of its victims.
