SPRINGFIELD -- To the hundreds who assembled at the Great Western Depot on that February morning to bid farewell to the newly-elected president, it was surely inconceivable that this would be the last time Abraham Lincoln would return -- alive -- to the state that was his home, his moral compass, for much of his life.
