1861 - Friday
Alabama becomes the fourth state to secede from the Union when a convention votes 61 to 39 in favor of the measure. Alabama had a much closer vote than other states, due to strong Unionist sentiment in the northern part of the state.

The surrender of Fort Sumter is demanded again and refused by Maj. Anderson.

Seizure of Fort Jackson and Fort St. Phillip, LA by State Troops.

1862 - Saturday
A Conf. force under Gen. Zollicoffer has entrenched at Mill Springs, KY on the Cumberland* River, despite orders to fall back.

Future president James A. Garfield is promoted to the rank of Brig. Gen. in the United States Army. Garfield was promoted in part for his valor in fighting Conf. Gen. Humphery* Marshall to a draw at* Middle Creek, KY, despite Marshall's* 3-to-2 advantage in troops

A reasonably relieved President Lincoln today accepted the resignation* of Secretary of War Simon Cameron, and then sent him to Siberia, or** at any rate appointed him ambassador to Russia. Although no proof of* personal dishonesty or theft by Cameron was ever determined, there* had long been * accusations of fraudulent contracts for war materiel, excessive involvement of politics, and general incompetence in the War Department.* It was widely reputed that the only thing Cameron
That such fraud, politics and incompetence existed was not* in question, just Cameron's involvement in it. The fact that he had** formerly been governor of Pennsylvania did not put everyone's mind at ease on the question.

A fleet of about 100 ships carrying troops under Union Brig. Gen. Burnside sailed from Hampton Roads, VA for the coast of NC.

NEW ORLEANS, LA
Mail service between the Confederacy and Europe has been established via New Orleans and Tampico, Mexico.

1863 - Sunday
* USS Osage was launched.

* In one of the rare ship to ship duels of the CW , CSS Alabama under Raphael Semmes sank USS Hatteras off Galveston, TX. but then risks capture by staying in the area to rescue the crew.

The land forces of McClernand, combined with the river gunboats of Adm. Porter, today captured Brig. Gen. Thomas Churchill's men of Fort Hindman, AR.** All of the Conf. artillery pieces destroyed or damaged by fire from the gunboats. Grant then ordered McClernand to return from his expedition, which had been totally** unauthorized, to join in the attack on Vicksburg. McClernand and Grant had never gotten along particularly well, but the future president did not yet have enough clout to have the other man removed from command, or at least from his area of combat. The victory secured central Arkansas for the Union and lifted northern morale just three weeks after the disastrous
Battle of Fredericksburg.

1864 - Monday
After the mutiny which took place last week in Alabama, Gen. Ripley takes no chances when he learns of similar discontent in the 22nd* SC Regiment stationed on Sullivan's Island.

"The investigation...was by no means satisfactory....I am satisfied, however, that there...still exists..., a rebellious state of feeling, the continuance of which was due to the inefficiency of the company* officers."

Gen. Beauregard adds his explanation to the report. "The colonel of this regiment was tried by court-martial on the 14th of May, 1863, from which time he has not been on duty with his command. The lieutenant-colonel has been suspended for months for utter in competency. The major has been absent for nearly a year without leave. Major Rion...,* whom I placed in command of the regiment..., is now absent, sick. I earnestly request that steps may be taken to supply this regiment with competent field officers."

Nathaniel Banks issues a proclamation to the people of Louisiana announcing an election to be held on February 22nd, Washington's Birthday, to restore Louisiana to the Union as a free state.

The Confederate Congress passes an act "authorizing the* tax...on bacon to be commuted by collection of salt pork as an equivalent."

1865 - Wednesday
The Constitutional Convention of Missouri, meeting in St. Louis, adopted an ordinance abolishing slavery.
