General Hooker, played by Mac Butler of Horsham, Pennsylvania in the forthcoming movie “Gods and Generals” being released by Warner Brothers in February, will appear at Rescue the Colors! to help the McClellan Rangers Reenactment Association raise funds to preserve the Ringgold Flag.
On November 2, 2002, from 9 am to 4 pm the McClellan Rangers Reenactment Association is hosting Rescue the Colors! a Civil War living history encampment to celebrate and raise funds to preserve the Ringgold Flag. The encampment will be held on War Memorial Field, site of the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer’s Camp of Instruction in 1861. War Memorial Field is on the campus of Central Bucks West High School, West State Street and Memorial Drive, Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
The day's events will include displays of Civil War infantry tactics and weapons, artillery demonstrations, camp life events, including civilian life and crafts, flag presentations and displays, and an afternoon parade through Doylestown reenacting the arrival of then Governor Curtin to present flags to the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteers.
Music will be provided throughout the day by the 28th Pennsylvania Regiment Brass Band, Charlie Zahm, a Philadelphian who sings the music of the Civil War era, as well as other folk music, and who has appeared on Gene Shay’s folk-music radio show on WXPN-FM and produced numerous albums of folk music, and by the McClellan Rangers Fife and Drum Corps.
In the Fall of 1861 the women of Bucks County, Pennsylvania presented the men of the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry with a national flag. The women raised the funds for the flag and embroidered the name and number of the regiment on the center red stripe. The Ringgold Flag, or Bucks County Flag, was carried throughout the Civil War by the 104th. The flag returned to Doylestown after the Civil War and was displayed in the Courthouse and carried in parades. The Ringgold Flag has not been seen in public since sometime in the mid- 20th century.
The now tattered banner is desperately in need of conservation. Though its condition is poor, and losses to the original fabric significant, a recent expert evaluation determined that the majority of the flag is still intact and can be preserved and exhibited at a cost of $18,000.
