Thanks for the links to the paper articles, covering the story. I hadn't heard anything about this event. Our local mistake, that calls itself a newspaper didn't have anything about it.

I would hope that whoever did that would get caught. I feel that destruction of all of history's treasures, are subject to being vandalized. It's a good thing that the Declaration of Independence and other treasured documents of our country are secured where hands are kept away from them or we wouldn't have them for long either.

It disgusted me to read these articles. I am from Mississippi and have been to Beauvoir. To have someone do this is just beyond comprehension and words. I hope that the person that did this is caught soon. Who knows what other Historical Landmarks are on the list to dishonor.

We know what kinds of people would want to distroy a Southern historical landmark such as this. The same ignorant trash that vandelize Southern monuments through out the north and south As well well as Northern monuments.

Whoever did it will be in dire straits if they are caught and prosecuted successfully. Arson is bad enough but if IIRC Mississippi is one of the states that passed the law making defacing or damaging monuments etc a felony with mandatory sentencing.
I will withhold my opinion on this until we find out for sure who did it and why. I hope that everyone would know that regardless of who and why I will pretty much automatically think they should be hoss whipped, preferably in the town square.

I'm curious - is Beauvoir located in an area that might be viewed as a hot target for development?

Some years back, I visited the Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta. This is the house where Margaret Mitchell and her husband lived while she was writing "Gone with the Wind." While she was writing the novel, the couple, not having enough money for a house of their own, lived in a relatively modest apartment at a corner of the house.

After Mitchell had become rich and famous and moved away, the neighborhood and the house gradually deteriorated. In more recent years, the neighborhood has rebounded and become fashionable again and several luxury hotels have been built in the area.

After many years of neglect, the house was acquired by a historical association, which made plans to restore the Mitchell apartment to the appearance it had when she lived there and then open it up to visitors.

One night there was a fire that destroyed most of the house. Had the entire house burned completely to the ground, the historical association probably would have given up its plans. But, as fortune had it, the corner of the house where Mitchell's apartment was located survived the fire intact. The historical association felt justified in rebuilding the rest of the house around the apartment and eventually opened the apartment for visitors, as originally planned.

The house is located very close to a MARTA subway stop, on a plot of ground that might be considered a very attractive place to build another one of those luxury hotels, if it weren't for the fact that this historically significant house stands on the site. When I visited, the people at the house indicated that, although it could never be proven, they suspected rather strongly that the fire was set at the instigation of someone who wanted to build a hotel.

So that's why I'm wondering if there's a possibility that someone might have a serious desire to build a hotel or other edifice on the site of Beauvoir, if only Beauvoir weren't in the way.

I am loathe to say this as there not one iota of proof in any form whatsoever to say it. But since other possiblities have been voiced I will do so with reservations.

I must guiltily confess my first thought was perhaps it was possible the firefighter did it. I hate thinking it cause I would be very upset if another Richard Jewell situation happened.
I thought it was nice that the firefighter got a lifetime family pass to Beauvoir.
