http://www.lewisgrizzard.com/columns/archive/dixie.htm

I must say that Mr Grizzard's views matched mine pretty much spot on in many ways. I miss reading his columns and books a great deal. Yet it brought to mind a not so pleasant issue. One I pretty much no longer feel free to speak upon.

I do not know a way to say it without "offending." or "insulting," as it appears only the South is the one to be insulted, and if they dare say anything They are the ones doing the offending action. I feel forbidden to use the term Yankee so I guess I will have to use Northern-Americans, Higher-Latitude-Placed Persons or perhaps "the "Y" word."

But this IS an issue, and it DOES affect those who are not Southern as well. There is no way whatsoever this current climate towards the South and everything Southern can reap anything good. Heck, they even changed the name of the very highly rated liberal arts university, the University of the South because a Chicago based marketing firm declared that the word "South" was supposedly offensive. A direction on the compass is offensive?

Very few seem to think this has gone overboard enough to do anything about it. (If this statement does not apply to a particular person, group or people, then it does not apply to them, OK? So before I get accusations of insulting people, bear in mind, it is not an insult anyway) If a Southerner speaks out against such things he is labeled a racist, or is automatically assumed to be the offending party. The true innocents of racism or bigotry in the Southern population Are getting tired of taking the insults, jokes and derogatory imagery, erasing of history, etc. with a smile. For example, even the late great Lewis Grizzard, who is famous for humor, was tired of it. Remember the last time the South felt it was pushed too far?

Most importantly, the future is in danger, as this is setting an ugly precedent. There are some who couldn't care less if the Capitol was renamed, as long as it is not named "Boise." Fair enough, that is an excellent example and opinion. Yet there likely will be Something that matters enough to them or their children or their children's children in the future to care about and It will be in danger too. And a precedent Is being set. If one isn't going to oppose this Politically Correct McCarthyism because it is the right thing to do, they could at least think of acting in their own self preservation.

Tommy

Thanks for the link, and still wish that Mr. Grizzard was around writing his stories. I agree completely with his views on the above article. The section of the state that I live in is completely tourist and retirement oriented. Most of the time this area makes the top ten list of places to retire in the country. So as a result we have more than our share of transplants. As Grizzard mentioned in his story, it's not uncommon to run into the same type of situation here, just about every day. I'am also tired of reading how history is being changed for the PC crowd. Changing the words in a history book doesn't change what really happened. The sad fact of it all, is that the views of a future generation will be based on false and twisted statements. The only ones that will know the truth, will be those that research out the knowledge. But you never know, that knowledge may not be available to them. The next order of business, after everything is PC correct, may be to burn all the books that aren't PC correct, like the Nazi's did back in world war 2.

I wonder,

I remember hearing stories about how the city of New York contained nothing but selfish, self-centered folks who talked funny, rode subways and dealt with rampet crime.

I remember hearing all the stories about folks from California, who were alway high, spoke nothing but val speak and were way 'out there.'

I remember the Polish jokes that were all the rage when I was young and how stupid those folks were and how many it took to screw in a light bulb.

I remember how if you came from the country or a small town how you were considered a 'hick' or hillbilly, and that label was put on you if you were from Southern Ohio or West VIrginia.

I remember all the jokes about Orientals from Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Okinawa, etc. and the Mexican jokes, even Canadian jokes from Second City TV.

I remember one joke about how fashion in New York and California was the only thing folks in Ohio cared about and with the neck lines plunging in New York and the hem lines rising in California, it would only be a matter of time before there was a bunch of naked women in Ohio.

My point? Every part of this country and every race living in it has been the subject of jokes and ridicule. I have seen jokes about Northern folks from folks in the South. I don't take it personal. I don't feel threatened or about to lose any of my cultural background or heritage. I don't feel a threat coming or feel as if someone is coming for me, my kids, my grandkids or anything I hold dear. To take that away from me would mean killing me. But I don't think it has come to that point in any part of this country.

Just one American's opinion.

Neil,

I am not just talking about jokes. If that is all it was then it would not be a problem. I would not feel about to lose a heritage over a joke. The jokes are merely symptomatic. Last time I looked there was not an effort to eradicate any and all things named for Orientals from Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Okinawa, etc. or the Mexicans, or Canadian, New Yorkers, the Polish or from California or any of the examples of subjects of jokes you provided.
But if one thinks the constant attack and removal and alteration of anything and everything even remotely connected to the South is a source of jocularity, then I guess it is a joke too.
But it is something I personally find lacking in the humorous requirements needed to qualify as a joke. I’m not laughing.

Tommy,

Why do you feel that anything and everything connected to the South is under 'constant' attack? Is it the symbols of the past? Is there something in the present that brings down the assault upon the region? What is it in particular you find so threatening, that is going to be taken from you?

I, too feel that the South is victimized in films, comedies, jokes, etc., more than any other section of the country. I also think there are a lot more redneck jokes on the internet for example than there are Polish jokes, New Yorker jokes, etc. It is a way of life for people in this country to ridicule Southerners and try to come off as being more sophisticated, more learned, etc. And Neil, you may have heard a few veiled references in jokes while growing up to other sections of the country, but can you honestly say that you still hear them in the same QUANTITY that you hear veiled insults about the South? Be honest now.

On "Becker" the other night a reference was made to the "trailer states". There's no doubt in anyone's mind that they weren't referring to Vermont or New York. The snide innuendoes and even more often blatant put-downs about the South have gone on for years and it apparently is still fodder for the joke mill in various forms of the entertainment industry. It equates Southerners with being dumb, illiterate and of course there's always some reference to inbreeding. One never hears that in reference to a Californian or a New Yorker, does one? No one seems to think that Southerners mind. Well, this one does. It is not funny and I frankly find it galling. No one would DARE to make jokes about African/Americans. Why is it that Southerners are still used as the butt of jokes and NO ONE comes forth and says this is distasteful and shouldn't be allowed.
It is all part of the process that has gone on since the WBTS of separating the South from other regions of the country. We are made to feel that we don't belong to this nation and that's wrong! We have contributed more men and women in the armed forces than any other region in this country. If we are capable of fighting for this country then certainly we deserve respect from it.

And as for your assumption Neil, that there are just as many jokes about rude New Yorkers as there are about Southerners, I suggest you try this as I did. Go to Google and type in redneck jokes. Now try typing in rude New Yorker jokes. If you keep scanning as I did, you'll see the difference. I haven't tried Polish jokes, etc. yet but I think you get the idea.

We had to fight here in Alabama to keep the three Confederate holidays as state holidays. In Alabama, Confederate Memorial Day is one of three state holidays tied to the Confederacy. In February, Governor Bob Riley proposed legislation to reduce the number of holidays by eliminating the April holiday and making the June holiday for Jefferson Davis' birthday into a joint observance for his birthday and Confederate Memorial Day. Riley dropped the legislation after Confederate heritage groups opposed it. Robert E. Lee's birthday has already taken a back-seat to Martin Luther King's birthday. Inch by inch the South has given away her heritage concerning a major portion of history simply because African Americans are offended by it. But history WON'T go away. And it shouldn't have to. Just because Hitler killed more than six million Jews are we supposed to ignore this part of history too simply because it is offensive to some people?

We are the Cradle of the Confederacy, the Heart of Dixie, but because Rep. Alvin Holmes finds that offensive, he had Heart of Dixie reduced in size on our car tags to minutiae so small that an ant couldn't read it. People responded by sending a dollar to get a "stick on" to put on their car tags. (And yes, it's perfectly legal.) Why should history be wiped out in certain areas ( i.e. children not being allowed to wear their Dixie Outfitter shirts to school in some school systems throughout the South while Malcolm X and Black Power, etc. shirts are deemed fitting apparel. BOTH are proclaiming pride in something and only ONE is deemed offensive.)

One young honor society student was banned from her high school prom because she had designed her prom dress with a Confederate motif. She'd been wearing Dixie outfitter shirts throughout the school year with no repercussions, but one day before the prom she was told that if she wore the dress to her prom, she'd be turned away from the prom and would NOT GRADUATE! This was done to a child who had never even been called to the principal's office throughout her entire school life, an honor student with an unblemished record.

Throughout the South Confederate monuments are being de-faced and in many cases are being removed from their original locations (town squares, etc.) to tiny cemetaries because they are deemed offensive by a minority of townspeople.

Do we have to give up the history of the Confederacy to appease a certain race of people? When did history become something that can be dismissed because it offends people? I get the distinct feeling that people are threatened by the Southerners love of the history of their nation. I know Northerners don't believe that the South created a nation but that's beside the point. Southerners DO believe it and they wish for their children to be aware of the history of this vital part of the history of these United States. A love of history threatens no one, but denial of portions of history is wrong!

Inch by inch these things are being taken from us. Even the gift shop of the Capital of the State of Alabama reflects this. Very little remains of tokens from the WBTS. It is all being replaced by tokens reflecting the Civil Rights movement. There is more history in the Capital since it was also the seat of the Confederate States of America than just Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks! WHY does one have to give up one portion in order to illuminate the other? It makes no SENSE to me!

This is going on in every state in the South. I use Alabama only as an example. Certainly anyone on these boards who has a love of history cannot deny what is happening.

The KKK has used the battle flag abominably but are Southern heritage lovers to be blamed for this? When the KKK flies the U.S. flag at their despicable functions (and YES, they do this although the media usually doesn't show them flying the Stars and Stripes on the news, do they?) does anyone call for the United States to ABANDON their flag? NO! The thought is ridiculous. The battle flag of the Confederacy was used by soldiers during the war and that is what it represents to true Southerners today, a symbol of a long ago pride nation who went to war to fight for principles they believed in. And before you get started on your eternal rampage about slavery, I'll remind you once again, that these farmers who fought this war didn't own slaves, they fought because they'd been INVADED.

I believe I've answered some of your questions Neil, but I'm sure Tommy has his own thoughts that he will present. In the meantime I will be re-arming to give you more reasons why I personally feel the assault on the South is ongoing, unrelenting and is perpetuated by those who do not want Southerners to feel any pride whatsoever in their region, their history, or their ancestry. To those who would think that we would be so easily dismissed, I would add: think again.

Also, this has absolutely no bearing on my being an American. I have no intention of moving to another country although I'm certain a few members would like that possibility. LOL I do realize that America is a great nation and certainly there is none to compare with her. But contrary to popular belief, it is quite possible for Southerners to love not only love their Southern heritage but to love being a U.S. citizen. If not, why would so many of them fight for her, as my relatives have done, throughout the years.

Until we meet again, I remain, YMOS,

Well said Thea. THANK YOU. You have stated what I have been trying to say to others, magnificently. This country is trying to be too
"Politically Correct" but it is only toward a portion of the population. I often think that our generations are punished continuously for what our ancestors believed in. We are not our ancestors. We are Americans also ... just have the honor to have been born and raised in the lovely South.

Thea, well spoken.

I haven't had a TV w/ cable or even regular programming access since 1996. I get caught up on "quality programming" when stuck in hotels. People wonder why I don't miss it. History should be taught and remembered not distorted, creativly told or outright lied about. I haven't seen the relentless assault on the South... in all honesty a large part of that is probably because of my lack of drivel intake from the media. What I have seen has been a near constant assault on Christianity by the media elite and the liberal left. If you think I'm wrong look at how the Passion was treated vs Gods and Generals or Cold Mountain... both Movies w/ a very pro southern lean I think.

Don't worry about me Thea, I'm equally offensive to everyone... except maybe 310 pound moving wall called a pro football player. Actually, I was quite shocked how articulate and intelligent Randy Moss was. Wonders never cease, I think I just managed to insult a pro football player... forget what I said about football players.

Thea,

I buy some of it, but not all of it. There is a region in this country called the South. There was never a nation of the South. There was an attempt to create one, but it failed.

When did the South and all things Southern come under attack in recent history? Let's start in the 20th century. When did all things Southern and Southern Heritage come under attack? What is the earliest time that you can remember in your life time that this happened?

Sincerely,
Unionblue

In response to your questions Neil I will begin thusly:

I believe the textbooks began to change in the early sixties. I also believe that with each step that the Civil Rights Movement has taken forward, the hatred of all things connected with the Confederate States of America has taken a marked step backward. I do not blame any particular people for this. It just seems that the NAACP and other organizations like it cannot allow any recognition of the CSA.

Also, in my opinion, when the Southern states seceded from the Union, they did indeed become a sovereign nation, if only for four short years. You are, however, entitled to your opinion, as I will keep mine.

Here is just a sampling of Confederate monuments defaced and hate crimes committed against people who love their Southern heritage and wish to honor it:

http://www.jquinton.com/archives/001079.html (The College of Charleston had just finished final exams and students were leaving town. Drugs and alcohol may have been involved too.)

http://www.bosewell.com/dixieland/hatecrimes.htm :
1) H.K. Eggerton, a black man whom used to be the president of the Ashville chapter of the NAACP, was attacked by two black men because he was waving a Confederate flag and telling people about his Southern Heritage.

2) On January 14, 1995, while driving with his wife, Micheal Westerman, a white man, was chased down and murdered by two black youths because he had a Confederate flag mounted to the back of his truck.

3) In Columbia, S.C. a Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp adjutant was chased down and beaten in his own driveway by a black man because he had a Confederate tag on his car.

4) In Mississippi Anthony Hervey, a black man who is a member of the S.C.V. was shot at from a car while checking the mail in his PO Box.

5) A statue of a Confederate soldier at Cedar Grove Cemetery in New Bern, N.C. was vandalized. ( The statue's head had been knocked off.)

6) A Confederate flag mural that had been painted on the wall of a GA. high school was defaced. (Since the event a vote was taken by the students and the flag was repainted on the wall.)

7) In Covington, GA, three flagpoles were torn down at The Georgia Confederate Cemetery

8) In Richmond, VA, the waterfront mural of Robert E. Lee was fire bombed by vandals.

9) The Nathan Bedford Forrest monument in Memphis, Tennessee had graffiti sprayed on it.

10) In Louisiana, Chuck Rand a recruiting officer for the LA Division of the S.C.V. was threatened by a KKK member because he did not allow KKK members to join the S.C.V. (Rand stated that the S.C.V. is a Heritage organization not a hate group.)

(11) In March 4, 2000, in Columbia, Maryland S.C.V. Member Brian Green had the Confederate Naval Jack, on the flagpole in his front yard, torn down and burned.

12) On August 17, 1995, at an Evansville, Indiana youth center, a car load of black men entered the center's parking lot asking 'Who owned the truck with the Confederate flags on it?' Jeremy Mabis, a 19 year old white man stepped forward and asked them to leave, then two of the black youths emerged from the car, one of them armed with a 9mm semi-automatic hand gun and fired at Mabis wounding him in the neck and hand.

13) The monument dedicated to Nathan Bedford Forrest in Selma, has been vandalized numerous times.

14) In Birmingham, Alabama the Confederate Monument had paint put on it.

15) Also in Birmingham, Alabama, Crosses of Honor were stolen from Confederate Veteran's graves in Elmwood Cemetery

16) In Fairfield, Alabama, a member of the Fighting Joe Wheeler Camp was threatened because he had a S.C.V. Logo on his car. (The S.C.V. Logo features a Confederate Flag surrounded by the organization's name and the year it was formed.)

17) In April of 1997, at the Cobb County Home Depot, Joel Coleman had his almost new Dodge truck keyed on both sides. At the time of the attack, he had two Confederate flag stickers on his truck one on the windshield and another on the rear bumper. The vandals left a full page, hand written hate letter under the windshield wiper. The letter stated:

"Some people are under the mistaken impression that the Confederate symbol on the GA flag has been there for a long time, and that it has something to do with their heritage. It has nothing to do with your heritage unless your heritage is racism. It was put on the flag in the 50's to protest Civil Rights. It means; "The South Shall Rise Again", and that " Georgia doesn't want to be part of the Union." It is absolutely nothing more than state funded, racial intimidation. I believe most Georgians do want to be part of the US. If not, there are planes leaving everyday. The courts have not given us justice. It is time to let them know that there is a price to pay for state funded racial intimidation and we must make that price high. If you see a car with that Racist, Nazi, KKK symbol known as the Confederate flag, you key that car, or break the antenna, or better yet pop a tire, or break a window. Throw stones at State owned vehicles... a Confederate patch on their jacket ... beat'em down. Tell friends in other states to boycott GA products. GA didn't get out of the Union, but certainly is the most Un-American, racist state! "Give me liberty or give me death." Make 100 copies, and distribute! You hate me. So I hate you. (Change or war?)"

http://www.catt.com/article.php?story=20040108154001743 : Battlefield markers at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park had scores of historic monuments, tablets, cannons and road signs defaced from paintball guns, officials said.

I could go on ad infinitum with this list but you get the general idea.

School text books don't tell the whole story of the WBTS. Political correctness has taken the place of historical accuracy.

This gets me started but I'm tired now and will stop for now. I will leave with this point to consider. The last Alabama Civics textbook to give adequate information concerning both the North and the South, what their aims were, and what was accomplised was printed in 1956. Since that time this hugely important war has been dumbed down to a couple of paragraphs and in no way explains the magnitude of what transpired or the implications even today.

Your servant, sir.
