Don't take a comment like "shave a ladies'-maid" as proof that women shaved anything... it's a turn of phrase... it's similar to somebody fighting their way out of a **** soaked paper bag.

I'm still trying to figure out you fellows' interest in this subject!!

It's certainly not proof of anything except that shaving lady's maids was not unheard of. If there was no such thing, how much sense would referring to it make?

Default Beards

Actually when you look at the pictures of most of the Civil War generals, you typically see rather lengthy beards. You would think being in the field long enough would make these lice traps.

It seems from history that it was at least feasible to actually be shaving, at least for some portion of the population, so for generals to be unshaven, it really must have been considered fashionable.
