Default 19th Century Points of View

Perhaps someone more well-read than myself could help me out. I really hope it makes sense...

How did Americans view one another from different parts of the country as the frontier moved west and the railroads allowed people to move more freely? For instance, how would a Virginian view a Tennessean (is that what they're called?) or a Midwesterner if they happened to meet? Vice-versa?

Highfly: My undertstanding is that meeting someone from another region would result in (a) either or both would be surprised to find that the other was not dirty, coarse, ignorant and mean or (b) either or both would have their beliefs confirmed.

ole, ole, ole. Your answer seems entirely reasonable and has been borne out to me by firsthand experience many times. However, I am laughing almost uncontrollably at it. I believe I will use my computer to make a decorative plaque with the question and the answer.
