The Ladies TeaStop in and grab a quick cup of tea! All sorts of ladies issues are disscussed here. Both Ladies and Gentlemen are welcome to join in the conversations.
On the flouncing message there has been a lot of "hot" Gone With The Wind chatting going on so here is another thought for you...
For those GWTW fans out there,
why do you think Scarlet turns the green bonnet around backwards intentionally while Rhett is visiting with presents??
I have my own opinion but I would like to know yours...
Good question, I guess I always assumed it was really because she didn't know what the style was and how it was supposed to be worn, although as you look at the hat, I think it is pretty obvious.
But maybe she just wanted that reaction from Rhett, to jump up and correct her, tying those lovely bonnet ribbons (isn't that fabric to die for, silk moire?) and having a chance to stare into those eyes!!
And while we are on the subject, we should start a GWTW thread. I know I'd enjoy that. I've been a convert since I was about 12 when I first read the book, then saw the movie when it was re-released in 1968 or 1969, probably the latter as it would be the 30th anniversary.
You start the thread and I'll join!

Ive always thought that was the case, and while the eyes may be to die for, sadly he sufferd with the worst halitosis.....so did H Bogart.

She did indeed turn the bonnet backward on purpose. She was being a coquette, inviting attention and perhaps physical contact. What a fast young lady!! (It also says something for Rhett that he knew about not only bonnets but pantalets... )
There are many layers of misbehavior in Scarlett's acceptance of the bonnet. She was in mourning, first off, and green was NOT a mourning color. She might have accepted a lavender bonnet, lavender being an acceptable half mourning color, but certainly not one with feathers. And then there is the acceptance of a gift of clothing from a man to whom she was not at least engaged. Tsk tsk!!
In the book, Scarlett accepted the bonnet but said that she would have to cut off the feathers and dye the whole thing black. Rhett took it away from her and wouldn't let her have it back until she promised that she would not alter it in any way. So she took the scandalous road to coming out of mourning long before she should have.
Whatta gal!

P.S. I'd chime in on a GWTW thread also... one of my favorite books, one of my favorite movies!
I will be gone for a week here and away from the computer, but when I get back, if no one has started a thread, I will.
Maybe we could start with favorite quotes or lines, from either the movie or the book?

There are several "closet GWTW" fans out there! I have been a huge fan and collector since Jr. High and to now be able to pretend the life style if a dream come true. Or should I say historically recreate? Whatever I get to be prissy and flounce around in a big ole skirt. I get to have men tip their hats when I walk past (a forgotten art if you ask me) and I get to go back to my comfy clothes when the event is over (with A/C). So I get to have it all!
I am all for a GWTW thread!! I think it would be fabulous, darlin!
And as to my question, my thoughts were, Scarlett was playing coy. All the better to get closer to my dear Mr Rhett. ~sigh they don't make em like that anymore~
I feel that altho a lot of the ideals of the south was lacking, the grace and the "everything that made the South grand" was an admirable trait. One that this southern gal misses. I guess I am a sit on the veranda and have a mint julep kinda gal!
Now all I get is Budweiser on the deck.
haha
Oh, the layers and nuances of antebellum etiquette... for instance, a gentleman will never acknowledge a lady on the street unless she acknowledges him first, or unless they are VERY well acquainted. This includes tipping the hat. If she makes eye contact with him, or appears to know him somehow, then a tip of the hat is fine, but he should not speak until she speaks to him. You see a bit of this in the movie GWTW when Scarlett sees Frank Kennedy when she comes to Atlanta and calls out to him. If he had seen her first, I'm sure he would not have shouted to her, but he might have moved close enough for her to see him. And of course Scarlett would never have gone out alone... she had her faithful Mammy with her.

Do we all know that this comes from the days of visors on knights helmets, and evolved into raising your hat to your equalls, and as a sign or respect to the fair sex?.
I think womens lib had a lot to do with the falling out of favour of good manners towards women, not quite what they were after im sure though.
